I once heard that "Juan Valdez" is not merely a fictional name, but is a generic name used in Spanish-speaking countries -- corresponding to John Doe in the US -- and that based on this, he is not merely a fictional character in coffee commercials, but it is actually true that Juan Valdez grows the coffee, as that name can refer to the real-life coffee-growers. Can anyone corroborate this? Should we add this name to the John Doe page? --Keeves 00:25, 1 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Keeves, I lived in Colombia from 1969-1970 and 1974-1986 and have been married to a Colombian since 1981. We both think people from other countries started calling Colombians "Juan Valdez" in a generic way after the advertising campaign's success. No, he shouldn't be added to the "John Doe" page. (The rough equiavalent of "John Doe" in Spanish is "Fulano" or "Zutano.")This link http://www.juanvaldez.com/menu/advertising/juan.html will tell you about the actors who have portrayed Juan Valdez. It also tells the story of the fictitious person long before the logo was devised. I remember seeing him on TV in 1971.

Suggestion: someone should add to the main article to include the fact that "Juan Valdez" has been around since 1959, and celebrated his 40th birthday with then-President Pastrana of Colombia on Sept. 13, 2001.209.161.166.94 19:15, 4 February 2006 (UTC)Been ThereReply
