editI am looking for information about a certain picture, which was done by "Joseph Suss" of a "rabbi" playing chess; I was wondering if anyone knows if this was done by the same joseph suss, or if there is a second one...
I'm sure there is more than one. Joseph has always been a popular name, with Jews as well as with Christians, and Suess, Suesskind…are popular names, too. -- Prorokini 00:25, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
That painting that you're referring to (can be found on the internet by searching for "Joseph Suss") is a relatively new painting; made in the last 100 years; or more likely quite recent. The board looks modern and the style of the dress is less then 150 years old. On the other hand Joseph Sus Oppenheimer (1698-1738) wasn't an artist; although there are roundels (colored small round drawings) depicting his trial and tribulations that were done at the time of his hanging in 1738. Bird Cage
editGibbeting is done as a deterrence to potential other criminals. He was actually placed in a "bird cage" to humiliate and demean him. Numerous antisemitic medals were issued in 1738; one depicting him in a noose; another depicting him in a human size bird cage with ravens eating his flesh; with the bird cage hanging in the square. In literature and film
editThe mail order catalog of International Historic Films in Chicago gives the date of the British film of Jew Süβ—which they render as JEW SUSS (AKA POWER)—starring Conrad Veidt as 1933 rather than 1934. Dick Kimball (talk) 16:48, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
