Forecasting

edit

Should be better discussion including the full forecast (unemployment spike, peak and decline)

There’s little doubt that Jon Fisher, the entrepreneur turned business professor, has made some good calls. In May 2008, with unemployment at 5.4 percent, Fisher predicted that the U.S. unemployment rate would soar to 9 percent within 12 months. In April 2009, the U.S. unemployment rate hit 8.9 percent. Last August, one month after Warren Buffett said that national unemployment could rise to 11 percent, Jon Fisher said no way -- the figure would peak at 10.4 percent and drop sharply thereafter, if it even got that high. As shown in the table below, the rate hit 10.1 percent in October and dropped to 9.7 percent in January. http://www.internetevolution.com/author.asp?section_id=654&doc_id=187747 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.126.179.231 (talk) 04:37, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism?

edit

This page is being vandalized by 76.126.186.253 (talk · contribs) (Oct, 2010) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.126.182.213 (talk) 08:01, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't see these edits as vandalism. It would have been better if there had been some discussion on why the tags where added though. The references do need citation info, which could justify the wikify tag, though isn't there a more exact tag for such problems?
The other problems are hard to assess with the references in their current, poor state.
Overly-promotional, poorly sourced information is regularly added to the article, so the NPOV tag might be justified if someone would point out specific concerns with the current version. --Ronz (talk) 19:17, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup

edit

I took a closer look and restored the advert tag as well. It was removed with only minor changes to the article.

I think we have enough to show he's notable per WP:BIO. Full citation information will help immensely making this clear, and in getting this article cleaned up.

I don't find the notability very clear. Anyone want to summarize here to help the cleanup? --Ronz (talk) 19:52, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have finished the clean-up and will watchlist the article. Any contentious unsourced or poorly sourced material will be removed as soon as possible. --Diannaa (Talk) 23:17, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for all the work.
Looks like we have some sources that fail verification, as well as a dead link.
Anyone disagree with the emphasis, especially related to notability? --Ronz (talk) 02:07, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
As for the dead link, this seems close, but doesn't verify the info. I'm not finding "Bidclerk" at construction.com. --Ronz (talk) 02:16, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
The guy seems notable; he has written a book and is an adjunct professor who is quoted in the Wall Street Journal. The first cite I tagged as failed verification confirms that AutoReach was bought out by AutoNation, but it does not mention Fisher and his relationship with the firm. Do you think the article needs any maintenance tags at this point? I would not mind seeing some sources to replace the ones that didn't pan out.
I am wondering whether or not the material in this cite http://www.marinij.com/business/ci_13016645 should somehow be incorporated? Partway down there is a fellow named Nickelsburg who disagrees with Fisher's analysis. It didn't seem necessary to leave it in as virtually every economic analyst will have some people who disagree with him. --Diannaa (Talk) 02:46, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm not questioning if he's notable, just hoping that others will think we have the notable aspects of his life presented properly.
It can be problematic to be notable for forecasting: correct forecasting is highly newsworthy, incorrect forecasting tends to be ignored. If Nickelsburg turns out to be correct then we'll more likely be removing Fisher's forecasts and maybe writing an article on Nickelsburg. --Ronz (talk) 03:16, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I usually forecast the Yankees to save myself a lot of heartache. Oh well. --Diannaa (Talk) 03:58, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

re Ronz: "notable aspects of his life" -Fisher unemployment cycle forecast already complete (2008-2009 bottom, 2009-2010 top). Fisher book required reading for MBAs including Berkeley (New Venture Finance EWMBA 295T). —Preceding unsigned comment added by PredilCO (talkcontribs) 18:05, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, PredilCO. This is exactly the sort of info that establishes notablity and would be worth including in the article. On a side note, could you please word your posts in plainer English so they are easier for me to understand? That would be super. Hope you like the improvements to the article. --Diannaa (Talk) 18:51, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
PredilCO, do you have anything on the "Forty Under 40" award? The link that was in the article no longer has the content we are looking for. If you know where the info is online that would be great. Or if you have access to a paper copy of their magazine and you could provide the issue number, page number, and so on? Thanks --Diannaa (Talk) 19:06, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Diannaa. The introduction to the applicable 40 under 40 award is here http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2006/10/09/focus1.html (note the last portion of the URL is “focus1” and note “focus 2” through “focus41” describes the 40 award recipients including “focus 16” that is Fisher. I did not find a page listing all the recipients but this should be sufficient. Your edits to this page are thoughtful and comprehensive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PredilCO (talkcontribs) 21:34, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Okay, now I understand. That is actually the page that was used as a citation in the article; I just didn't realise how it worked. I will remove the "failed verification" tag. --Diannaa (Talk) 22:08, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Promotional wording in lead.

edit

@Hawaii 808 1986: Hello.

This is the source you added to support "investor" in the first sentence:

  • O'Brien, Chris. "O'Brien: Jon Fisher says selling company -- and missing out on IPO -- should be every entrepreneur's goal". Mercury News. Retrieved 1 April 2013.

This source doesn't call him an "investor". It calls him a "serial entrepreneur".

Further, the lead isn't intended to be a laundry list of all possible titles, it is intended to be a brief overview of how sources reliably and consistently define the topic. I dispute that sources consistently define him as a public speaker, as there is only one example of such cited in the article. Further, his viral speech was related to his role as an adjunct professor, not as a stand-alone position.

Since your accounts has only ever made edits around this topic, I recommend reviewing Wikipedia:Conflict of interest if this applies to you.

Please also note that, per Help:Minor edit, A minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. The addition of vaguely promotional language to the lead is not minor as the term is used on Wikipedia.

Thank you. Grayfell (talk) 02:44, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Julie Bort is a conservative and well known journo; on this particular page she is quoted as follows:

In 2016 Julie Bort wrote for Business Insider that CrowdOptic's technology was "so cool, we've never seen anything like it."

patents

edit

source says:

Jon’s former company Bharosa was awarded a key contextual authentication patent—number 7908645. It ultimately received five issued patents with 12 patents pending. His current company CrowdOptic has just been awarded a US patent allowance for its new and innovative solution. Fisher explains: “We recently received a patent allowance on the technology behind triangulating 2 or more electronic devices focused in the same direction at the same time. For instance, consider two phones at a common event triangulated to come up with a location of where the phones are looking.” Washington Times

Compare that to the article:

Fisher was a co-patentee in a contextual authentication patent awarded to Bharosa, which later received five issued patents and has twelve patents pending.

Note that he also says: “I like to be referred to as an inventor” says the 20-year serial entrepreneur. “I build businesses from ground zero. Society calls that entrepreneurship; I call it invention.” Polygnotus (talk) 23:29, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

In most cases, mention of patents is best suited to resumes and promotional pieces. If we don't have independent, reliable sources discussing why specific patents are important to Fisher's life, they probably shouldn't be mentioned. --Hipal (talk) 16:25, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

"Prediction of 2010 US unemployment peak"

edit

I think we should get rid of the "Prediction of 2010 US unemployment peak" section. It is ultimately patting him on the back for doing something unremarkable. The sources are his predictions, not other people (significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject) who wrote about them so they don't appear to be notable. Even for Nostradamus we don't have sections in his article for each individual prediction. And in the articles about Jon and other CEOs we don't have sections about each prediction they got wrong. Polygnotus (talk) 23:34, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

This has been discussed earlier, in Talk:Jon_Fisher#Cleanup.
I've been wanting to reassess this with an eye on what historical context the independent sources actually give, if any. It's removal is probably fine. --Hipal (talk) 16:31, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Dude bet on Google Glass. He said Smart glasses will replace Smart phones in 2016 [1]. Embarrassing. Polygnotus (talk) 07:11, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

First sentence

edit

Jon Fisher (born January 19, 1972) is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur.

So we got 3 facts: a birth date, a location and a job description.

This claim has 4 refs (see WP:CITEKILL), despite the fact that it is very unlikely to be disputed.

The first source, marinmagazine, doesn't mention a date of birth nor Silicon Valley.

The second source, a WSJ blog, says "a serial entrepreneur, has been the CEO of three companies in the Valley".

The third source, mercurynews, calls him a "serial entrepreneur" but does not specify his location or date of birth.

The fourth source, bizjournals, calls him an entrepreneur and says "the CEO of CrowdOptic, the San Francisco-based startup".

So the one thing that should actually be sourced, his date of birth, is unsourced. And the four sources used only support the parts of the sentence that will not be disputed (we know he is an entrepreneur). It is unclear if he actually lives in Silicon Valley and what his date of birth is based on those sources. I think this article needs a rewrite. Polygnotus (talk) 07:14, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
