Joke
editApropos of absolutely nothing, I remember a joke going around when I was in grade school back in the 1960s, which was that Johnny Unitas was going to open up a chain of restaurants called "Unitas Steaks of America". soulpatch
Number 19
editOf only slightly more relevance, shouldn't something in the article mention his number 19? I don't know what team that started with or who retired it, etc., or I'd add it myself. But it will certainly help when I get around to my article on slang poker hand names (A-9, or aces and nines, is called a "Johnny Unitas"). --LDC
"Pop Culture"
editThe first few references have nothing whatsoever to do with pop culture and should be removed. Somebody seems to have gotten that section mixed up with 'trivia'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.33.84.245 (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Johnny Unitas
editI believe Johnny Unitas, deserves a lot more, respect than that. It's disrespectful to, even joke about someone who, did a lot of stuff, that you could probably never do. And, just because, someone names a poker hand after him, doesn't mean, it should be discussed, under a Johnny Unitas, talk page. C2 aaron 14:21, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
- Dude, you don't, happen to be, a fire and brimstone, southern, preacher? Because, your misuse, of, commas, and, the resulting, rhythm, to your speech, cause you to, sound, quite frankly, like you're informing me, about, the evils, of sin. --Action Jackson IV 05:31, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- How is it even disrespectful? Johnny Unitas was a good guy and a good football player, not a deity on earth. His name may be spoken. Get over it.4.158.198.72 (talk) 21:08, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Johnny U Clip
editCan anyone give me a small clip of Johnny Unitas playing?
Thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.254.168.239 (talk) 23:59, 8 January 2007 (UTC).
Unitas was a breed apart
editOnce, while playing a game, Unitas broke his nose. To stop the bleeding he shoved mud up his nostril. He played the entire game. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.213.113.57 (talk) 22:16, 24 April 2007 (UTC).
Stats Removal
editThey were removed per WP:EL. Jmfangio ► Talk 20:20, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- Stats aren't external links. Please explain. Thanks. Stevie is the man! Talk • Work 06:28, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
A direct quote from WP:EL - "Such pages could contain further research that is accurate and on-topic; information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics,..." Please explain how this is any different. This is a problem throughout the WP:NFL project. Jmfangio ► Talk 06:47, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
1960-1967 seasons
editI don't understand why the information that was added for this time period in Unitas' career was removed (as well as the details added to the 1957-59 seasons). Between 1960 and 1967, Unitas had some of his best seasons in the league (including MVP seasons in 1964 and 1967) and yet there was nothing about this in the main article prior to the additions I added. Please explain before deleting again. Thanks -- Sb26554 03:20, 12 March 2008
Age when his father died
editThe AP obituary lists his age as 4. Other sources, including an ESPN sportscentury feature and what's possibly a letter from his own wife give his age as 5. Is it possible that the AP story contains the real mistake? Are there other reliable sources that give the age of 4? --Onorem♠Dil 22:36, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
update re: 1968 injury
editI'm going to change the description of his 1968 injury, as I don't think calling it "chronic" is completely accurate. Unitas suffered a specific injury in the preseason, and since they didn't have such things as arthroscopic surgery, the only available treatment seemed to be resting the arm. (I could be wrong on this point - perhaps another member is a medical expert.) Elsquared (talk) 02:37, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
There is conflicting information about his 1968 injury. He apparently had already developed a chronic problem, but it was either aggravated or an additional new injury happened in that last preseason game. His passing stats took a noticeable drop after that, which I noted.Cow257 (talk) 20:50, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Life After Football
editThe article currently says, "Due to an elbow injury suffered during his playing career, he was unable to use his right hand." I shook hands with him in 1979, and his right hand worked just fine. I remember how huge it was. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cowdery (talk • contribs) 00:56, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- From my own personal experience, I have a pinched nerve in my elbow that affects usage of my left hand. I can certainly shake hands with it, but I don't have full motor abilities, and I regularly get hand cramps. Now imagine a sports injury in the elbow. At any rate, the content should reflect the sources, whether one can grasp it or not. Stevie is the man! Talk • Work 01:45, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- The source says "barely has use of", not "unable to use". I changed the article phrasing accordingly. —BarrelProof (talk) 03:02, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Inclusion of Baltimore Ravens Ring of Honor in infobox
editShould Baltimore Ravens Ring of Honor be listed among the highlights in the infobox?
- Oppose I note that yes, he is indeed a member of the Ravens Ring of Honor. However, he was never a member of the team and this honor comes off as very minor in an infobox that is already crammed with many more prestigious and relevant honors. Editorial judgement should be used here; the purpose of an infobox is to give an overview of the most important details of a player's career. This is not an important detail, it's merely a footnote. Lizard (talk) 21:42, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose per Lizard the Wizard' reasoning. He had no relations to the Ravens and just because they honored him it does not mean that "Ring of Honor" thing should be mentioned in the infobox. – Sabbatino (talk) 07:32, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
