Priesthood Question
editThis is probably a stupid question, but I'm confused by the four generations of priests in the Venn family. Are you supposed to take a vow of celibacy when you are a priest? Or is there some version of Evangelical Christian priest which is different from the Catholic priests? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 148.78.243.122 (talk) 16:25, 14 March 2007 (UTC).
- Hi - Only Roman Catholic priests take a vow of celibacy. Church of England priests (of which the Venns are) do not. SteveBish 23:45, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Also, it was compulsory - up until the late 19th century - for teaching staff at British universities to be ordained. So every member of an academically minded family was likely to be a priest as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.156.55.52 (talk) 22:28, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- That's putting it a bit too strongly. At Oxford and Cambridge it helped a lot at that time to be an Anglican priest, but it was not necessary for every academic position there. NRPanikker (talk) 22:33, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Venn family
editHey! can some one clear up which Venn is which? Osfan1011 00:58, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Greatest mathematician lists
editI just now deleted the newly-added, unreferenced material about John Venn and a BBC survey. If it's a legitimate item regarding Venn, then it needs a robust reference. Please do not re-add the deleted material unless you have one to share. The lists I've seen tend to have Gauss and many, many others ahead of John Venn. See, for example Eells, W. C. (1962). "100 Greatest". Mathematics Teacher. 55. and also this web page, neither of which lists Venn. My hunch is that such surveys and lists of "The Greatest" are dependent on just who is surveyed and when. - Astrochemist (talk) 11:01, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
- Let me explain this one as you may see that, going back along the history of this article, I have been reverting these kinds of changes for a few years! This started at school when some firends of mine and I were debating the 50 most important mathematicians of all time. Now I used to argue that, purely in the field of mathematics, Venn probably wasn't as important as many others whereas my friends, probably just to wind me up, argued otherwise. Anyway, this kind of turned into an in-joke which they eventually brought onto Wikipedia to further wind me up. It is totally fabricated. If it turns up again, delete it without question.Icosahedron (talk) 13:58, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the above information. I'll take your advice. -- Astrochemist (talk) 15:21, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- This is quite plausible where the BBC interviewer would show a member of the public a list of candidates of English mathematicians, one of the few to be recognisable by a man on the Clapham omnibus would be Venn. 194.207.86.26 (talk) 01:57, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Verifiability

Odd Phrase
editWhen reading this article, the statement "the cause of his death was not specified." caught my attention. Not specified by what or by whom? Sorry I don't have any resources on John Venn, I just thought the phrase was odd. 198.150.183.44 (talk) 16:21, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Right to Eponymity
editAccording to what logic (pun intended) are Venn diagrams called Venn diagrams? They were invented by Leonhard Euler. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.156.55.52 (talk) 23:02, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Replace Venn-stainedglass-gonville-caius.jpg with Venn_stained_glass.jpg
editVenn_stained_glass.jpg is a better (although not great) image in my opinion.
Also I see Venn-stainedglass-gonville-caius.jpg is nominated for deletion above.
Summary: Replace https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Venn-stainedglass-gonville-caius.jpg with File:Venn stained glass.jpg 136.24.209.134 (talk) 05:32, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
