Photo

Is there any chance of a better photograph of him? The one we've got is excessively small. -- Arwel 01:18, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I think the problem is copyright/GFDL - AFAIK the current one is cropped out of a photo taken by a Wikipedian and so is definately OK. There is a decent 'promotional' headshot on Bruton's own website. Blorg 09:33, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I found a decent EU photo of him. It's been uploaded. Hoshie 03:18, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

All-Party talks

edit

I disagree that he was opposed to the Brits going slow with All-Party talks. I recall Bruton supporting Unionist arguments that there should be no talks including SF before decommissioning, until late into his term. Peter O Connell

"Public School"?

edit

Who wrote this? What country are we talking about? Clongowes is a private secondary school. El Gringo 18:06, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Such exclusive schools are known frequently as public schools in Ireland. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 19:29, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Since when? Can you footnote that? El Gringo 19:38, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wife

edit

This article BTW contains a lot of POV. The statement Some have attributed Bruton's softening on social issues such as divorce to the influence of his wife, Finola is absurd. Anyone who knows the couple knows that she is more conservative than JB. He was actually talked into supporting divorce at the start of his leadership by Jim O'Keeffe, TD. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 19:29, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The statement no longer appears in the article. Andrew🐉(talk) 15:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Date format

Ireland uses International Dating (dd/mm/yyyy) not American Dating (mm/dd/yy). The right to place Irish articles in ID is explicitly stated in the MoS. I've reverted Raul's reversion. Super Jumbo's edit was correct. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 02:14, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Irish name

edit

Is there any evidence that John Bruton ever used the name Seán de Briotún? -- Evertype· 00:11, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

In all probability, he never used it outside of Irish class in school. However, when he was Taoiseach, it may have been used in official translations of press releases and such. Snappy56 (talk) 12:52, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
"May" is not good enough! I'm asking for evidence. There are 21 citations on Google and all of them are Wikipedia related except for some discussion in Irish wondering whether he ever used the name or not. We've got to do better. -- Evertype· 15:02, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
We've had this discussion before for Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen and their Irish names. It didn't really reach a conclusion. Remove it, if you feel strongly about it. Snappy56 (talk) 23:52, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bruton: the embarrassment of it all

edit

I see a revision at 02:20, 18 June 2007, by an anonymous user (71.166.150.103) who was clearly a Bruton fan, removed entirely the (highly embarrassing) parts about Bruton's comments during the visit of Charles Windsor. It also removed his comment about the "fucking peace process", corruption in his government/the resignation of Michael Lowry, and it seems anything which he didn't like including the gombeen's description of him as "John Unionist". I'm restoring all of them. 78.16.98.134 (talk) 16:21, 3 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
