Career section

edit

First sentence of this section says that Astin began his career in theatre, doing voice-over. That makes no sense. Voice-over is generally associated with broadcasting, mainly in advertising. You usually need an AFTRA card, which most theatrical actors don't have. It would also help to distinguish between "voice-over" (narration and TV commercials) and "voice acting" (such as voicing characters for animated films.)

I don't know if you're familiar with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, but in the original stage musical, the voice of the Book is always a voice-over as there isn't a character associated with it.

Sean Astin

edit

It says here Sean is his biological son, but on Sean's page, it says he isn't. What's the story here?

It says currently, "John also legally adopted Sean Astin, Duke's son from a previous marriage." Ajarehi (talk) 01:36, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

It says where? Was that in this article, with Sean now being ruled out as biological son here? Carlm0404 (talk) 06:15, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Oscar

edit

For what role was he nominated?--BenWoodruff 16:38, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

He wasn't, actually. That needs to be reworded. He was nominated, in a sense, but not as an actor; a short film he produced, wrote, directed, and starred in, Prelude from 1968, was nominated for Best Live Action Short Subject. So the phrase "Oscar nominated actor" is thus misleading, since his nomination was for the short itself, or for his overall work as a filmmaker on that short, but not necessarily his performance in it. -- Aleal 21:24, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Will somebody please add The Brothers O'Toole? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.227.2.19 (talk) 16:27, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Also in season 2 of Mad About You, he was in the episode called "Up All Night". He tangoed with Jamie and flipped off the roof. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jilley76 (talkcontribs) 14:37, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I never saw that, but he displays a gift for physical comedy or gymnastics in the Addams Family series which I am watching. When he decides to stop standing on his head, for instance, he rolls onto the floor and stands up immediately. Finding something reliable about this talent might be difficult. I just found out about the role of Charlie in Twilight Zone episode "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim". Carlm0404 (talk) 06:11, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Smoke?

edit

The main page of this article would be improved if it mentioned whether he is a smoker, or if he ever did smoke, and whether he quit if he did. Dexter Nextnumber (talk) 02:04, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

The article on the Addams Family says that he did smoke cigars, and added that trait to the character "Gomez Addams," but quit after the series ended. The citation is "Cox, Stephen (1998). The Addams Chronicles: An Altogether Ooky Look at the Addams Family. Cumberland House Publishing (2nd Edition). ISBN 1888952911." As you may know, on that show he was seen to stand on his head and smoke a cigar at the same time, perform trick ping-pong shots and other feats. Whether any of that is worth mentioning, I cannot say. Wastrel Way (talk) 18:55, 5 August 2020 (UTC) EricReply

More recent picture?

edit

Is there a more recent picture that can be used for Astin's Wikipedia page? The current one looks like very dated. Ajarehi (talk) 01:39, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Military Service? (US Navy)

edit

Speaking of the picture being used, one can't help noticing that he is in a dress uniform for the Navy with the rank of a Lieutenant Commander. Was he a reservist? Did he ever do any active duty or deployment? His age at the time of the picture (1977) would be about right, at that time, for that rank depending on when he started. It would be unusual for someone to put out a "publicity" photo in a formal military uniform without some sort of affiliation. Just curious...
Dirty Dan the Man (talk) 21:04, 27 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

As indicated in the caption, it's a publicity photo from a television series in which he played a naval (submarine) officer ("Operation Petticoat"). Lynn25 (talk) 02:17, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Should this line be added ?

edit

With the death of Lisa Loring, Astin is the last surviving cast member of the original Addams Family (1964–1966) TV series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.184.49.138 (talk) 06:33, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

is John Astin really retired?

edit

I get that he’s almost 94 and he hasn’t done film and TV work in a while, but is there any actual confirmation he’s really retired? RayKVega (talk) 06:45, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

The years active bit was changed in October and the retired part was added last month; both editors didn't add an edit summary to explain themselves. I'm not sure if he's officially retired, but his [John Astin - IMDb IMDb] says he's been on some podcasts since his supposed 2021 retirement.
