Talk:John "Grizzly" Adams

Latest comment: 3 months ago by DennisModMod in topic Who's Hittell?

Lifetime

edit

"born October 12, 1812 (according to his gravestone which also gives his first name as John) and died October 25, 1860, although many reports offer October 20, 1807 as his date of birth. (Correct if he was 53 when he died.)"

Something can't be right in this sentence, either even if 1807 should mean 1870, a death at 53 would be wrong (it would be 58 then, in the other case 48)

Name

edit

On Find-A-Grave he is named John Adams. Lincher 20:28, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

There is a great deal of confusion regarding the real name of Grizzly Adams, because he used an alias of James Capen Adams, and sometimes William Adams when he was in California during the 1850s and even when he moved to New York in 1860. His real name and birthdate are John Adams, born October 22, 1812. [1][2] This information has recently been updated in the posting of his revised Find-a-Grave memorial [3]. This article needs to be re-titled to reflect the first name as John, and a re-direct page set up to refer searches for James Capen Adams to this page. Whirlyguy (talk) 21:04, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Death discrepancy?

edit

At first glance, the cause of his fatal head wound seems to be attributed to both The General and some monkey:

"Although never fatal, by the fourth time the General severely injured James Adams' head, it left his brain exposed.

Adams died at about 53 years of age of meningitis from the open head wound that resulted from an accident while training a monkey on tour with P.T. Barnum in 1860."

Are both of these injuries correct or only one? This should be clarified at the least 198.175.55.6 (talk) 03:28, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed Revision

edit

Moved to /First Proposed Revision

Also, see post under NAME heading 31 May 2011 - I am a novice at making changes, so I need someone to help with posting this revision... please.

The Title of this article needs to be changed to match the real first name "John" - perhaps someone can create a new page and redirect this page to the new one? Whirlyguy (talk) 16:05, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Second Proposed Revision

Moved to /Second Proposed Revision

I propose adding a major revision shown above. I will appreciate any suggested modifications or comments.

  • It should stay here, see [{WP:COMMONNAME]].
  • I have moved your proposed revisions to sup-pages.
  • I have also removed the categories, DEFAULTSORTs and interwikis from them - these should only be used on the actual article.
  • Add new sections to the end of the talk page, not the beginning.
  • We use "sentence case" for titles. Thus "Early years" not "Early Years".

Major Revision

edit

The whole article is repeated several times within itself. It needs to be revised to remove the double and sometimes triple repetition of information, almost word for word at times. Enderwigginau (talk) 11:38, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adjusted a repeated citation to show only once. List of references need to be adjusted to link to the citations.... Enderwigginau (talk) 11:52, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Who's Hittell?

edit

One starts (and keeps) reading the article as it is now, and at some point the article reads "However, Adams told Hittell, his hunting and trapping career ended abruptly". Ok but... who's that "Hittell"? That person is not mentioned before, so this makes few sense as it is at present. Kintaro (talk) 21:13, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Kintaro I updated first mention and linked to full name, Theodore H. Hittell. Added description of Hittell as writer and historian, per his WP article. DennisModMod (talk) 01:17, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
