Nomination for Speedy Deletion

edit

Mazeau has nominated this article for speedy deletion on the grounds of lack of notability, which I strongly oppose. Swarbrick is the new athletic director of one of the most prominent college athletic programs in the country. His prominent position in the college sports landscape makes him plenty notable. His predecessor had his own page, as does pretty much every AD of a prominent university. The nomination was frivolous and the product of either overzealousness or ignorance of the subject matter. Either way, there's no reason for this article to be deleted.-PassionoftheDamon (talk) 22:39, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article lacks sufficient outside sources to prove the subject notable. Article should therefore be deleted. Simple as that. Mazeau (talk) 22:43, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, not. The article contained outside references, and now contains even more. Please restrain your overzealousness in the future, especially if you are so very unfamiliar with the subject you are proposing for speedy deletion.-PassionoftheDamon (talk) 01:38, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The article had not any sources initially, prompting my nomination. As Mr. Passion writes his statement above this, references had since been conveniently added only after my nomination. Either way, the subject matter has since been resolved; no further review in regard to this is necessary. Mazeau (talk) 02:38, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Abruptly"

edit

I removed the word "abruptly" from the description of White's resignation in June because it seems to express a point of view that the news reports do not include. I can be convinced; I'm not saying it is never written anywhere, but it seems like a description that is being put in because of a point of view, not because it adds anything to the article. He was the AD for 8 years, and he decided to go elsewhere...abruptly has connotations to it which aren't necessary (especially not here, in Swarbrick's article).  Frank  |  talk  11:52, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's not meant to carry, convey, or imply any POV connotation other than the fact that his resignation was indeed sudden and unexpected. There had been no indication that he was entertaining thoughts of leaving beforehand and many were caught off-guard by the resignation. The word "abrupt" is only meant to be descriptive of the circumstances of White's departure and not to reflect negatively on White himself or his decision. I'll try and find some articles later tonight that use that word or similar terminology.-PassionoftheDamon (talk) 21:38, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am not questioning whether or not it was abrupt. I'm merely asking for a citation for it. I looked and couldn't find any reliable sources that used "abruptly" or similar language to describe White's exit. Remember that Wikipedia is about verifiability, not truth.  Frank  |  talk  22:25, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're right. I checked for some sources myself and have been unable to find any employing that or similar language. I seem to remember the suddenness of White's resignation being discussed a bit on various ESPN programs (e.g., College Football Live, First & 10), but have not found that in any articles. The closest I've found is a quote from White talking about the opportunity "popp[ing] up at the right time at the right institution." I'll remove it.-PassionoftheDamon (talk) 02:29, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - I couldn't find that either; I'm glad I am not crazy, at least today. (I would have been perfectly happy to have it with a cite, though.) Sometimes seems silly to have all this discussion over one word, but I like to look long-term. And I felt pretty good that this article was a CSD when I saw it, but now it's a real (if small, so far) article. If you do find it - let's get it in there. Cheers!  Frank  |  talk  02:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
