"cooled to hundreds of degrees below zero" - is thought in Fahrenheit? Should be expressed in clear text. Celsius would be more actual. Or, better changed to a usual level or range of levels, as the the level is different according to the wavelength of IR to be detected.

Yes it was too many words not saying much. I figure cryogenic strikes the appropriate degree of vagueness at least for that paragraph. Coolants can be named where they are known, for example in articles about specific instruments but more thoughtful editors might think such details belong here.
