Reebok

edit

Should it be mentioned that Reebok came under a lot of fire when they named a running shoe Incubus. As I recall, the shoe was geared toward women. Anyone else recall this?

The suffix -cubus

edit
Incubus, from Incubāre = to lie upon something. --Salleman 19:20, 8 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Check the dictionary for all these terms. The answer is there. E.g.:
  • Main Entry: suc·cu·bus
  • Pronunciation: -b&s
  • Function: noun
  • Inflected Form(s): plural suc·cu·bi /-"bI, -"bE/
  • Etymology: Middle English, from Medieval Latin, alteration of Latin *succuba paramour, from succubare to lie under, from sub- + cubare to lie, recline
  • a demon assuming female form to have sexual intercourse with men in their sleep -- compare INCUBUS
  • "Cubis" comes originally from the Latin word "cubo" which means to "to lie down" or "to recline". There is also another option, though pushing it, which is the Latin word "sucus" which translates as "juice" or "sap". --Tylendel 13:15, 20 September 2006

Marxist drivel

edit

Removed Marxist drivel about supposed sexual repression as possible explanations for the incubus legends. If someone wants to include this, please back it up with documentation. Wikipedia isn't the place for speculation. - —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.161.89.237 (talkcontribs) - 22:04, 23 February 2006

Incubus or Succubus?

edit

If Incubi and Succubi had a fixed gender, would their label be defined by their gender, or the gender of the humans they (most often) engaged in sexual acts with? For example, if an incubus (or succubus) had a fixed male form, but was "homosexual", what would they be called?

Incubus. —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 17:39, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

homosexual? homosexual demons? is this a legitimate quandary? 72.174.2.252

also- it says that the incubus, like the succubus draws power from the victim, often to the point of death. but this sentence follows one that says the incubus impregnates its victim. what is the point of impregnating a victim you intend to kill?.. they either kill them or impregnate them... pick a side. we're at war. 72.174.2.252

Cleanup

edit

Added a cleanup tag. As it stands now, this article is somewhat of a mess. Certainly there shouldn't be so many see also links, nor that bulleted list. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 19:26, 6 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Did what I could. Rewrote part. Made bullet points into paragraphs. Removed extraneous links. If it's not germane, it's not germane. If in text, no need in links section. Incorporated and expanded some internal links into paragraph. Still needs proofing. :) Dlohcierekim 16:21, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Needs sources. :) Dlohcierekim 16:30, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
The Origins section should be removed. It's all just speculation with no sourcing. It's ok to say, "Soandso believes X," but not the format it is in now. --Lendorien 20:16, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Melt Theory

edit

Though counter to the melt theory, it has also been said and recorded numerous times the trying of exorcism where upon an incubus has taken homage in a woman or man's body. Exorcism though usually effective, an incubus or succubus has never been able to be exorcised. This may be because of the measure of lawlessness this type of demon portrays, or lack of care, or simply pure ignorance.

Creation of incubi?

edit

Does anybody know how an incubus (or a demon in general) is "made" if they can't reproduce? Just curious. Statuess 15:55, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Well, this is off the top of my head, but in Christian mythology, Demons are literally fallen angels, created with the regular (unfallen) ones at creation. Presumably they couldn't reproduce without human companions and are otherwise immortal.--Lendorien 20:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jewish Myth of Lilith

edit

If anyone is familiar with the Jewish story of Lilith, this might offer some answers as to origin of the beliefs surrounding incubi... basically the story tells of Lilith (first woman, before Eve). She left Adam when they argued about her status as his equal. She went off and had releations with demons. She bore them children. The legend proposes that some of those children were incubi and succubi. This tale is on several Jewish spiritual websites. GuardianZ 10:22, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually the story goes back further to Lilitu in Mesopotamia, where she was part of the incubi-succbi class. (Altho they were not called incubi or succubi) She was by no means alone either.. This has already been added to the article, besides Lilith's later medieval lore as a mother of incubi and succubi, perhaps that deserves a mention. But i think that Lilitu/Lilith more of belongs on the succubus article and side of things. Xuchilbara 18:42, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Incubus and Reebok

edit

Do you think it would be worth mentioning the goof-up Reebok made back in 1996 be shipping 53,000 sets of women's running shoes with the name Incubus on the boxes. Turns out they'd been looking for names for their new product and someone came up with that one... only no-one bothered to look up the meaning first. It wasn't written on the shoes themselves. Naturally, this is just trivia now, but it did get a lot of attention back in 97 when it first hit the news. I remember reading about it in Time Magazine. http://www.petting-zoo.net/~deadbeef/archive/2298.html --Lendorien 09:25, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Citation Needed?

edit

Is it really appropriate to request a citation regarding an incubus's behavior? They don't exist so how can you prove or disprove anything on the page?

If I claimed they liked to eat Perrier and twinkies how could you prove me wrong? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 156.101.9.1 (talk) 20:40, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's not whether it is true or not, but whether it's true that a verifiable source said it. I suggest reading through WP:V for the relevant policy. Aleta Sing 00:25, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Questions

-Can an incubus/succubus be homosexual? I’d be really happy if they could, like, come on. Gay demons. That’d be awesome. Corythasaurus (talk) 04:49, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
