Current HGNC official symbol MUM1 versus previous symbol MUM1
edithttp://www.genenames.org/cgi-bin/search?search_type=symbols&search=MUM1&submit=Submit: So there's a current HGNC official symbol MUM1 for "melanoma associated antigen (mutated) 1" (HGNC_ID:29641, Location:19p13.3, protein-coding gene) and yet there's also a previous symbol MUM1 for current symbol IRF4 "interferon regulatory factor 4"? If the latter existed first then wasn't it silly to allow the former to become an official symbol? If the former existed first then ... someone bestowed the symbol unofficially (before HGNC assigned official symbol IRF4) without checking to see whether it was already taken for another gene? Anyone know the explanation for this? Quercus solaris (talk) 06:06, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
The problem with IRF4 is that it has a number of old synonyms based on where it was located: LSIRF, MUM1; NF-EM5; ICSAT. MUM1 translated into multiple myeloma oncogene 1. Given this the naming is not happy but it has been done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.152.51.84 (talk) 13:18, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Sources for potential edits
editHello! I am a student editor for this page. I am hoping to expand this page's discussion of the role of IRF4 in immune cell development, in particular long-lived plasma cells. I have attached a few sources that I am planning on drawing on in my planned edits. If anyone has any questions please let me know!

- Hello again! I have just finished adding the series of edits I mentioned making to this page. Considering that I have made some fairly significant changes to the page, including adding the section on the role of IRF4 in immune cell development, if anyone has any questions please let me know. Thank you!
