Scope

edit

The article begins with IBM printers for second generation (discrete transistors) computers. Should it include earlier hammer printers used on first generation (vacuum-tube) computers, e.g., IBM 370 IBM 370, IBM 716? Shmuel (Seymour J.) The title is "IBM hammer printers", not "IBM hammer printers for transistorized computers", so I'd say it should include older printers.
(P.S. Wrong IBM 370.) Guy Harris (talk) 23:03, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
The IBM vacuum-tube machines used:
I changed IBM 370 to a DAB page; I've never seen IBM 370 used for S/370 in the wild. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 15:06, 25 November 2022 (UTC) --Revised 18:49, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what technology the 720 and 7030730 on the 7080 used. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 18:49, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
This IBM 720, which is listed as being used on the 705? Are you saying it was also used with the (transistorized) IBM 7030 and (transistorized) IBM 7080? This physical planning manual for the 7030 only lists the 1403-2 as a printer; this physical planning manual for the 7080, however, lists the 717, 720-2, and 730-2 as printers. I found this[1] for the 719, 720 and 730 on the 702 and 705.
IBM used a lot of unit record equipment from the 700 series on the 7000 series. I don't know what IBM's original plans were, but by the time that they shipped the 7030 there were no 700 series devices on it.
The 7070/7071/7074 don't appear to have any 700 series devices, but the 7300 Disk Storage Unit and 7400 printer appear to be based on older devices, e.g., IBM 350. I don't know the antecedents of the 7400, but with a plug board and print wheels it's probably based on one of the tabulators.
The 7080, 7090 and 7094 all support 700 series printers. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 17:23, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Carriage tapes and Form Control Buffers?

edit

How should the article deal with the old carriage tape and the newer Forms Control Buffer (FCB)? Should there be a section describing both or should each printer description mention which, if either, it uses? Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 14:15, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
