I redirected Gymnostomaceae here, as that was listed in the 1911 Britannica. The following was the entry from there: "an order of ciliate Infusoria characterized by a closed mouth, which only opens to swallow food actively, and body cilia forming a general or partial investment (rarely represented by a girdle of membranellae), but not differentiated in different regions. With the Aspirotrochaceae it formed the Holotricha of Heinrich vom Stein."

I'm sure this must be an obsolete taxon, but if anyone finds out otherwise, please let me know or redirect Gymnostomaceae accordingly. --DanielCD 30 June 2005 19:54 (UTC)

It's an obsolete taxon, the same as the gymnostomes listed here. This is the right place to send it. Josh

Some comments on my edit of Nov. 13, 2011

In its previous form, the article had worn a "missing references" tag for more than two years. In supplying the missing citations, I found it necessary to reorganize & rewrite the piece. The earlier article (which appears to have been based on an introductory chapter in Lynn's The Ciliated Protozoa) seemed to suggest that the order Holotricha was introduced by Otto Bütschli. After restoring Stein to his historic place, I found no reason to keep the table showing Bütschlian taxonomy -- which was, after all, just a transitional step on the way to Kahl's system (which would be too long to include). I also felt I needed to bring John Corliss's important revision of 1974 into the history.
