Reference to Hate Group Publication

edit

References included reference to "Shots Fired: Sam Francis on America's Culture War (Vienna, Virginia: Fitzgerald Griffin Foundation Books, 2006), pp. 162–164." Fitzgerald Griffin Foundation is listed as a hate group at http://www.splcenter.org/intel/map/hate.jsp and Samuel T. Francis is listed in Wikipedia as "an anti-capitalist[1] paleoconservative columnist, nationally syndicated in America, known for his racialist views." Fixed. Zilphia Horton

edit

Where does Zilphia Horton fit this picture: [1] cites "(Dunaway, Seeger 222f)" (presumably David Dunaway's biography of Pete Seeger, How Can I Keep from Singing) "...Zilphia Horton (one of the founders of Highlander)..." That's a pretty solid book, so I would assume that she was, if not in the narrow sense a founder, something quite close. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:37, Dec 4, 2004 (UTC)

Don West, Communist Party

edit

According to the FBI, Don West was a member of the Communist Party. http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/hfschool.htm "The Highlander Folk School, located in Monteagle, TN, was founded by Don West, District Director of the Communist Party in North Carolina, and Miles Norton, Director of the Commonwealth College."

A good historical assessment of the Communist Party in the U.S. should include the fact that they were active in fighting segregation, and that the did so by having members like West teach people how to organize. And a good assessment of Highlander should point that out.

At any rate, it's true, and it's relevant, so it belongs in the article. --Nbauman (talk) 15:51, 1 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
