The introduction says "His life was a rags-to-riches story befitting a hero in a Horatio Alger story" and this is true, and the very interesting thing is if there is any indicator that he was the inspiration for some of the Horatio Alger books, like for instance if Alger knew something about Pittock, can we include some proof of this if it is existing. - It is a comparison, and fairly common literary allusion, referring to his rise from "barefoot and penniless," to leaving the largest estate ever to have been probated in Oregon at the time of his death. This is documented in several of the referenced citations, one biographer stating it as "self description." The newsboy connection is just gravy. The wikilink is for those who may be unfamiliar with the recurring themes of Horatio Alger's work. I would not be upset if it were deleted. I am quite sure I am not the first to make the comparison, but I don't want to search for whomever may have made it before me. Or, I could rewrite it to make it clearer that it is a comparison, not a statement of fact regarding any actual relationship between the two individuals, other than one lived a life very closely resembling the fiction written by the other. The biographical sources employed far more florid language. -- "J-M" (Jgilhousen) 18:10, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

editThe paragraphs in Oregonian publisher and editor are alarmingly close to the contents of this reference. When I have more time I'll check it more thoroughly. —EncMstr 18:06, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

editI'm not sure how to do this, but could someone please review the summary box on the right? His birth date is clearly off from the date provided in the title.

editIt's either 1834, 1835, or 1836, according to various reliable sources. Which is it? Valfontis (talk) 06:47, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

I would rate it as GA, but it has not yet gone through GAC.--Yannismarou 17:33, 2 January 2007 (UTC) |
