Part-time TA course

I've reverted this a couple of times as it seems to be unsourced, and I don't think it should be added unless we can find a reliable reference to support it. The user who added this has directed me to Army Reserve (United Kingdom)#Officers which is all well and good, but doesn't actually relate to Bolton and therefore seems like original research. The issue is fairly simple. Some time ago, "City and Guilds" and "Sandhurst" were added to the infobox as Bolton's alma mater. Now City and Guilds is not a place to study, but a qualification and makes as much sense as putting GCSE as an alma mater! That had to go and I deleted it. I did not put the "two weeks" qualifier after Sandhurst, but when it was deleted I did replace it with something like "part time, max 8 weeks".

How long and when was Bolton at Sandhurst? Well, as a professional soldier he only reached lance-corporal, so not then. As a TA officer cadet, he would have to do 4 two-week courses (or weekend equivalents), one of which can only be done at Sandhurst - the others may be done at other Army training centres. So, Bolton spent at most 8 weeks (non-consecutive) at Sandurst, most likely less, and very likely only two (or weekend equivalents). The link I gave above explains this.

Two, four, six or eight weeks as a part-time soldier hardly qualifies the claiming of Sandhurst as an alma mater in my view, but, if it does, it is only right to add the qualifier that he was not there as a full-time professional officer cadet. In any case, there is no source given to say that Bolton did attend Sandhurst! It all seems to be an attempt to boost Bolton's standing. Emeraude (talk) 12:13, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

But we do need a source to confirm the length of time he was at Sandhurst in order to add that particular information. Otherwise mention of Sandhurst should be omitted altogether from the infobox. I do get your point. I once did an one-term online creative writing course with Oxford University but that doesn't make Oxford my alma mater, and were I a public figure it would be misleading to add Oxford under education to my infobox. That's exactly my point. (I can add four universities I've done short courses at - one for two days, and one at a distance!) Deleting Sandhurst is a possibility, but it is the case that TA officers will have spent at least two weeks there and Bolton's commission in the TA is referenced, impeccably, in the London Gazette. Given that, it is, I think acceptable, but is it significant? Boosting Bolton's standing indeed. Emeraude (talk) 08:57, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
