When Henley received its name
editMy research into my Great Grandfather suggests the locality may have been called Otokia. He applied to buy land here in 1861. Margaret Shaw and Edgar Farrant in their local history, The Taieri Plain, place the name Henley much earlier and link it t John Hyde Harris a lawyer, judge, businessman and local politician who owned land here and came from Henley on Thames. The earliest reference is in the Bruce Herald newspaper, April 1871, where the context makes clear there had been substantial drainage work done on the Henley Estate.
