Year of conviction

It was 1920 according to the NYT, so I changed the year and cited it to there, but that left the statement that he wasn't an anarchist hanging. I assume that that's from the ALWW, so I cited it to there, but I don't have a copy. Statement that he wasn't an anarchist is my line to clarify for readers that one needn't have been an anarchist to be convicted of "criminal anarchism" under New York law — just like C.E. Ruthenberg wasn't a syndicalist but was convicted of "criminal syndicalism" under Michigan law, ditto Anita Whitney in California. I suspect that if that isn't made explicit there will be drive-by tagging of the article with (actually inapplicable) anarchism templates. Carrite (talk) 06:34, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Workers' League

According to the NYT, Winitsky tried to run on the Workers' League ticket from prison. Any idea what this "Workers' League" was? It's not any of the Workers' Leagues I can find from various dab pages, although maybe I missed it. It seems that it was a communist front organization, since according to the NYT, its secretary in 1921 was Edward Lindgren.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 18:26, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

The Workers League was a New York-only forerunner of the legal Workers Party of America that ran candidates and made public speeches in the 1921 campaign. The question of whether it was "legitimate" for Communists to participate in "bourgeois democratic" elections was a hotly-contested subject at the time and a big contributing factor to the factional war of 1921-22. Obits

There do not seem to have been any obituaries published in either the Socialist Call (OO of the Socialist Party) or the Socialist Appeal (OO of the Socialist Workers Party). I don't have film of the New Leader (SDF) in hand yet to check that; I'll take a look at the Daily Worker (CPUSA) momentarily. Carrite (talk)
