Fair use rationale for Image:Harrisscarfe.gif
editImage:Harrisscarfe.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:51, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
List of stores
editI have concerns about this list remaining in the article.
- The list violates WP:NOTDIR, in that it seems to be a directory, which Wikipedia is not for
- The formatting of the list is inconstiant across the article - some entries are linked, some are not; some have opening dates, some don't
- There is not any referencing in the entire list, and unless someone was to find a list on Harris Scarfe's website, we would have to break WP:NOR to reference this
- Quoting the note next to Burnie, Tasmainia, "outlet is to close in July 2009" - we are now in April 2010 - list is (at least in part) out of date
- "Its 12 Allens Branded stores are currently being rebranded to Harris Scarfe." - I visited a town in NSW with a former Allens store in early 2009 and it was a Harris Scarfe.
Furthermore, a simular list of Myer stores was deleted at AFD last February, and furthermore, a precedent to that AFD was set at this AFD 4 months earier.
I am proposing this list is removed from the article as a violation of What Wikipedia is not, in particular, Wikipedia is not a Directory. Yes, several of my concerns could just be worked on, but I think there is little value of this remaining, and as such, I make this proposal. Thanks -- sk8er5000 yeah? 21:26, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
- Removed the store list but not the section. Bidgee (talk) 14:01, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, I wanted to get some input about the list before I went and removed it, but if someone else wanted to be bold then I wouldn't have cared really. Thanks for fixing that. -- sk8er5000 yeah? 07:13, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
NPOV dispute - politically-biased commentary
editThe final paragraph under The Trescowthick era states "The year 2000 was difficult for all retailers, as the Australian Government introduced a new retail turnover tax (the GST). Many retailers suffered a reduction in sales and profits after prices increased due to this new tax. Like many other retailers, Harris Scarfe felt the pressure of this trading challenge"
This is misinformation. The GST was a replacement tax, not a "new tax" (which implies "additional tax.") The "price increases" were largely opportunistic, not increases in real prices and the contraction after the GST's introduction was matched by a surge before as people anticipated the changed tax structure.
I suggest that these two sentences add nothing to the article, are politically biased and so should be deleted.

I deleted it. The whole article is a disaster and needs to be rewritten. This store deserves maybe three paragraphs at most. 203.122.227.125 (talk) 10:48, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
September 2019 - possible further NPOV/COI issues
editIt appears that there have been more NPOV/COI issues arise, with a large amount of content which may be considered to show the firm in a negative light having been removed by an IP editor. As I'm largely inactive these days - seeking someone more active to review. -- sandgemADDICT yeah? 06:28, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
Manchester?
editCould a local explain the use of the word "Manchester" (or simply link to the relevant article, if it exists - I couldn't find one) in this article? As an American I've never heard this word used this way... I googled and gather it means linens, but it's totally inscrutable to me from this article. Any explanation or link in the text would be great, thanks! Jessicapierce (talk) 02:40, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
- Nice one, Jessica, thanks. I hadn't realised it was an Australianism. The great Oxford English Dictionary has "Manchester cottons" and "Manchester wares" with exactly the same meaning but the Australian Oxford Dictionary does have (lower case) manchester ... Household linen; the department of a shop in which such goods are sold. "Only Australian shoppers buy their sheets and pillow cases from a manchester department" quoted from The Bulletin of 1983. Probably another expression that will die with the "baby boomers", with the simultaneous decline of department stores and onslaught of global merchandising. - That's so interesting - really do learn something every day here. Thanks very much for the info! Jessicapierce (talk) 17:16, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Name change and date?
editIn the article it says in 1866 it was renamed "Geo. P. Harris, Scarfe & Co.", but it doesn't say when the name was changed from that to Harris Scarfe. Also was it ever called "Harris & Scarfe"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8000:1048:3000:8CB5:2804:9376:319C (talk) 23:47, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
2019-2020 section
editThe 2019-2020 section is too long and needs to be broken up into several subsections. Editingstuff124 (talk) 02:32, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
