Family name
editBorn most likely as Gustave Rolin, he personally appears to have added his wife's family name to his. There is a long list of people named 'Rolin Jacquemyns', several of whom of nobility. It would be a surprising coincidence if their family name would not have been inherited from Gustave Rolin's mostly used one. This does however cause two questions needing an answer:
- Why is Gustave's secondary name spelled 'Jaequemyns' while the assumed descendents' name has a "c" instead of an "e" as third character (and is most often separated by a space character instead of a dash)? Most likely a patronym, the name would have been derived much earlier from the forename "Jacqueme", which only later became "Jacques"; the French 'in'-sound is spelled in Dutch (the language native to the Flemish area in which Gustave was born and his father had become elected, and of his mother's family name) as 'ij' which was often written as 'y'. Perhaps Gustave's handwriting may not have been clearly readable, or (perhaps as a consequence of that) the 'letter of mourning' may have misspelled the wife's name. At his death, if not his widow or a son or daughter, the one of the Rolin family members that gave the name to the printer may have known the Rolin names very well but not the correct spelling for the family name of Gustave's wife, or it may have been a typo by the printer who may have misread the name written by hand: such letters need to be printed and distributed very quickly so as to invite people in time for the funeral, and do not allow proofreading or reprinting... At present, that "e" has become far more often used for this person, but that does not necessarily mean it is the proper spelling and hence the correct name for this article (and that for other language Wikipediae), even while it has become used in the literature.
- Was the addition to his original family name made official? That appears necessary for apparently all descendents until this day to have been able to maintain that double name (though spelled with "c"), apparently officially. If so, it should be stated in the article.
Here are a few examples of what caused my above described assumptions and doubts:
- Emilie [not the wife, but someone still alive] (http://cobaltgallery.skynetblogs.be/tag/photographie and many other sites)
- Didier (http://www.belgianconsularunion.be/Consuls/in%20Belgium/rolin_jacquemyns_didier.htm) 'Consul Honoraire' in Thailand. This function and location appear too much of a coincidence for this person not to be a descendent.
- Bernard (http://trendstop.rnews.be/en/management/r/ro.aspx)
- Laetitia (http://www.fundp.ac.be)
- Géraldine (http://fleurdelyst.be/list-80)
- MARIE EMILIE GABRIELLE MARCELLE (http://home.scarlet.be/ddarche/book2203.htm)
- Edouard [Baron] + Marie (http://www.b-all.be/genealogie/dat50.htm#6)
- Hélène Angélique Amélie Marie Rolin Jacquemyns (born 28 April 1889 Brussels) (http://gw0.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=aubreby&lang=nl;pz=pierre+olivier+vincent+yves;nz=d+aubreby;ocz=0;p=helene+angelique+amelie+marie;n=rolin+jacquemyns)
- Marriage between Hippolyte Charles Léon Louis Rolin and [the above] Hélène Angélique Amélie Marie Rolin Jacquemyns, in 1909 (http://gw0.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=aubreby&lang=nl&pz=pierre+olivier&nz=d+aubreby&ocz=0&m=AM&v=8)
- Albéric Gustave Joseph Marie Rolin (1843 Mariakerke [Gent]-1937 Brussels) ["Baron, professeur émérite à l'université de Gand"] was the father of this Hippolyte (1885-1914) and also of (amongst others) another Gustave (1892-1918), according to Pierre Olivier Vincent Yves d'Aubreby (http://gw0.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=aubreby&lang=nl;pz=pierre+olivier+vincent+yves;nz=d+aubreby;ocz=0;p=alberic+gustave+joseph+marie;n=rolin)
- The correspondence in that '1 envelope' at the City Archives of Ghent may reveal the way Gustave Rolin himself spelled the name he appears to have adopted from his spouse Emilie.
It would be interesting to know whether during his political years in Belgium the journals already used the second part of his family name; and if so, whether it was then mainly spelled with a "c" or an "e".

/* See also */ Edward Strobel — first American Adviser in Foreign Affairs
editSorry about the red link. Edward Henry Strobel was the first American Adviser in Foreign Affairs, and as such was Gustave's successor as "foreign affairs" advisor to the government of Siam, though they had a host of nationalities advising in other departments. I didn't know how to smoothly add Strobel into this article, but it does show the Siamese government was after the best foreign-affairs talent they could get. Perhaps this would work: See also

- Happy editing. I have no objections. Perhaps it would be better just to refer to a (partial) list as you suggested above. Kleuske (talk) 14:03, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
