Powers and Abilities

Please it is pertinent before making any drastic and extreme changes to this section such as deleting the entire section that you discuss your opinions as wikipedia is a colloborative project and not a dictatorship or autocracy. Celestina007 (talk) 13:51, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Comment moved from User talk:Tintor2: I'm sort of driving by, but, like, based on what I can see, it's unfair to accuse Tintor of blanking to prove a point or of asserting ownership. In general, having a "Powers and abilities" section is often seen as too WP:INUNIVERSE for a character article. Any relevant powers and abilities should be integrated into the "Appearances" section. I have reviewed the section and Tintor is correct: at least 60% of the section is unsourced, and it is unwarranted and better integrated elsewhere. Having like six sentences sourced does not make the whole thing sourced. Please see some recently promoted articles of quality: Allen Walker, Yu Kanda, Lenalee Lee, Millennium Earl, Boruto Uzumaki, Naruto Uzumaki. Ability and powers sections ~Cheers, TenTonParasol 14:27, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

TenTonParasol i do appreciate the work both you & Tintor2 have established on the encylopedia but nonetheless we are goverened by polices in this environment.
Now, TenTonParasol you make mention of the section having few citations; well i need not remind you that is nonparaeil to include few citations that best represent a claim or text rather than an ugly citation cluster. see WP:Citation Overkill
Also having a powers and abilities section doesnt impede an articles chance of getting raised to GA status that is an unsubstantiated theory, furthermore it is not about the article rather my concerns relate to the behaviour of the editor. Blanking an entire section or page when it isnt an attack page or a made-up story is improper and we all know that. If it were a new/fresh editor he/she would probably be shaken and permanently quit wikipedia editing.
However on a jovial note i have rectified both problems indicated by Tintor2 The Superman vs Goku Death battle has been moved to the "Appearance section" and more inline citations have been added to the Powers and abilities section. Cheers.Celestina007 (talk) 17:20, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Powers and abilities is already covered by Conception and creation, which describes how Toriyama made his character superhuman and then an alien. A separate section talking about how he has different Super Saiyan levels isn't necessary. The Ki-Energy stuff doesn't have the same weight or importance to the understanding of his character. The teleportation is already covered by "Appearances in Dragon Ball" so you're not introducing any new insights. Also Superman vs. Goku is a single episode of a non-notable series so it doesn't need a separate paragraph.AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:56, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
I've added death battle into the list and found some other media that's more prominent like Epic Rap Battles in History which won a Streamy Award. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:22, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Just to clarify a couple of things, just to make the line of reasoning here clear. I didn't say stick eight citations at the end of every sentence, which is citation overkill. I was pointing out that whole paragraphs went unreferenced, there were paragraphs that ended in no citation; that is unacceptable. Adding in a whole section about powers and abilities that aren't deeply relevant to understanding the character breaks WP:WEIGHT, as mentioned by AngusWOOF, and WP:INUNIVERSE, which I mentioned before. Removing the section isn't against policy and is very much in line with various policies. My bringing up GAs and FAs is to show that there is a precedent for how powers and abilities are handled in these kinds of articles, and that's in integration with the rest of the article, mentioned when necessary. ~Cheers, TenTonParasol 18:38, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

I would greatly appreciate if we can keep the current powers and abilities section. It took me a lot of time to search for all of the references, and make it as matter-of-fact accurate as possible, to avoid future misconceptions about the character in this area. The structure is also patterned after the format found in most western superhero character pages. David A (talk) 18:20, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

I'm afraid it still fits into the category of fancruft. We don't follow western superheroes. Only relevant moves or transformations should be listed. For example, see Naruto Uzumaki. While the character masters multiple variations of a technique, only the most relevants are mentioned in the article. In Goku's case I think, however, we could add the Ultra Instinct information to the appearances section considering it is important to the current plot.Tintor2 (talk) 18:28, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, the different abilities and the extent of power for the character are intrinsic relevant details of the fundamental appeal of his storyline, and the current section is very brief, matter-of-fact, and to the point. I do not see how it causes any harm, and think that it serves the public interest to supply the information. David A (talk) 18:35, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
As stated before, his superhuman abilities are already covered by "Conception and creation" as well as "Appearances in Dragon Ball media" sections. Everything from turning into a giant ape, to the different super saiyan levels as well as his signature kamehameha. The references can be added there if they haven't been already, and they have world-view objective context (i.e. the author gives Goku this ability because of X reason). But stuff like Super Saiyan Blue is something coming from the latest Dragon Ball Super media. It does not need a separate Powers and Abilities section for that. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 18:41, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, there are several abilities that are not covered there, the extent of his power in different areas is not mentioned there either, and it is useful for interested visitors to get all of the relevant information neatly ordered into a specific section. David A (talk) 18:49, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
What are those abilities that readers need to get a bigger understanding of Goku's character? I mean, I've been watching Dragon Ball since I was a kid but I can't find anything missing there. Still, I repeat, we should mention his Ultra Instinct in the Dragon Ball Super section.Tintor2 (talk) 21:56, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
I have submitted the entire section that was cut out below. I do not think that everything there has been covered elsewhere, and in any case, it is much easier to find a specific section for those who are interested in his abilities and power level. David A (talk) 03:46, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
I would appreciate if we can continue with this discussion, as I still think that this is removing important information from the page. David A (talk) 20:49, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Son Goku is capable of vast superhuman strength (sufficient to overcome the gravity of a black hole),[1] durability, and speed (sufficient to move after the assassin Hit had stopped the flow of time itself),[2] flight, projecting energy blasts (such as his signature move, the Kamehameha), sensing the location and scale of power of others, teleportation up to interstellar distances via instant transmission,[3] growing far stronger after being damaged and recovering,[4] telepathy,[5] sealing adversaries into small containers via the Mafūba technique,[6] creating a ki barrier around himself to protect against poisons,[7] and collecting energy from all of his allies into a spirit bomb, that is considerably more powerful than his regular attacks.[8][9]

During Goku's initial fight with the god of destruction Beerus, after achieving the Super Saiyan God form, the mere force of the shockwaves from his punches was presented as sufficient to destroy the entire universe in a few blows,[10] and his power has grown enormously since then, with the far more powerful enhancements of Super Saiyan Blue,[11] Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken (this increases the power and speed of the previous form up to 20 times),[12] and his most dangerous technique, the Ultra Instinct (身勝手の極意, Migatte no Goku'i), which allows him to instinctively avoid incoming attacks.[13]

Could someone please change the picture into the very first appearance of the character, which is at the cover of the first volume? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.80.247.35 (talk) 15:06, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

I guess they aren't using that one since the lead makes a point that the West first grabbed Z rather than the original one. A manga image that has both Goku colored could be useful if we find one.Tintor2 (talk) 15:46, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Under 'Portrayals' add Ray William Johnson. Portrayed in Epic Rap Battles of History 195.225.189.76 (talk) 11:01, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

Declined: Not notable. --Sk8erPrince (talk) 11:06, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
At the 4th Streamy Awards, it won an award for best music video. Does this count as notable? The 'Portrayals' section already includes Dragon Ball: Ssawora Son Goku, Igyeora Son Goku, which is also unofficial media. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.225.189.76 (talk) 11:20, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
Nobody cares about unofficial Dragonball media. Sk8erPrince (talk) 11:33, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

Genki Dama, Genki dama, and Genkidama all redirect to this article, and understandably so, since that element of Dragon Ball is covered here. However, there is also an album by Farid Bang named Genkidama which a reader may be looking for. Therefore, please add the following hatnote to the top of the article: {{Redirect|Genkidama|the Farid Bang album|Farid Bang discography}}. While the album is nowhere as notable as the fictional character, it should be possible for readers to find it. Thanks in advance for considering this request. 50.248.234.77 (talk) 02:11, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Not done: To answer your question, a hatnote is not appropriate because there is no standalone article for Farid Bang's Genkidama album, and this is an article about Goku the character as opposed to his genkidama ability. My proposed solution is that either you create a standalone article for the Genkidama album (provided of course that it meets notability criteria for music albums), or we can mention that Farid Bang was inspired by one of Goku's signature moves when naming his album. A cursory google search indicate that there is at least one source which support that claim, but it should be no longer then a sentence under the "Cultural impact" section. Language of Names

Should we replace the Japanese words in the article with what they are referred to in the English Sub/Dub and translated manga as this is an English Wikipedia article? I'm asking because several other articles are doing that. ECPBlue (talk) 02:50, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

I know this is late, but I think the Japanese kanji along with the romanization should be kept in. Such info relates to the characters. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:100D:B051:BA17:C468:F650:58C8:B860 (talk) 06:50, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
