Maiden name usage

Why does the whole "Early life" section, which describes events before her marriage, refer to her as "Fetterman" rather than Almeida? (I would edit it myself, but the page is locked.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.62.44.177 (talk) 13:43, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Illegal vs. Undocumented

edit

72.68.163.56B before making another reversion and leading to a edit war, I suggest we come up with a consensus here. I am moving our discussion from your talk page here. We should not use the term "illegal immigrant" in an article about a person when "undocumented immigrant" will suffice. Fetterman was brought over to the United States as a child, obtained a green card, and is now an American citizen. I, for one, believe in using undocumented immigrant because the term "illegal" falsley implies criminality while presence in the United States without proper documents is a civil offense, not a criminal one. It's calling a criminal defendant guilty before a verdict is rendered and it implies finality even though immigration status can change (for example, Mrs. Fetterman is now an American citizen). Furthermore, the category that this article is placed under is titled "Undocumented immigrants to the United States" not "Illegal immigrants to the United States" (see here). -- Willthacheerleader18 (talk) 14:46, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

It is inaccurate to say that "undocumented" immigration is a civil offense, and your claim reflects an ideological bias that should be kept away from this subject. It is categorically and unequivocally illegal to reside in the United States "without proper documents." Illegal immigration, legally defined as improper entry and failure to depart, is a criminal offense for which there are civil penalties, such as fines and deportation. Perhaps the title of the category should also be revised to accurately reflect the legal reality of the United States. Undocumented immigration is illegal, there is no debate about what is clearly written in law. However, I still think that the term illegal immigrant should not be used. This may have been debatable a decade ago but I haven't seen a reputable news outlet use the term "illegal immigrant" in many years. In keeping with a neutral pov, I suggest we follow the current AP style book, which suggests the term "undocumented". Additionally, Fetterman was only a young child when she moved the US, which makes the use of the term "illegal" particularly inappropriate. 2603:8080:FA00:3A25:607E:A96C:6CA5:4DD3 (talk) 08:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
