On the night of December 11, 1797, a daring attack occurred near the parish of Eastwell. In the early hours, between two and three in the morning, Hatton's servants were ambushed and beaten by a group of masked and armed robbers. Infuriated Hatton wasted no time—he swiftly announced a huge bounty for the capture and conviction of the robbers. The reward was quickly published in the Kentish newspaper to spread awareness.
