• It's a stylistic choice to avoid repeating "died" twice in one sentence. The closest I can think of as a compromise is "The family was poor. Gao's father Baoxiang died when Gao was seven years old, with his mother dying two years later." He is thus not advocating for sociology as a formal science, but rather emphasizing the need for the artist to know the human mind and human society.
