Request for changes

edit

Hi I have a conflict of interest and on behalf of G42 would like to request the following changes be made to this article to update and improve the content.

Firstly, the article should be renamed to G42 (company). The name Group 42 was previously used but G42 is the modern name used to describe the company in all press and subsidiary names. I can submit a page move request as well if that is sensible but it seemed logical to request this as part of my wider request seeing as there is also a need to replace the mentions of Group 42 in the rest of the article with "G42".

Secondly, the article is missing a lot of the enterprises and joint ventures, which has made other information outdated as well. The article needs considerable expansion, but as a start, can the introduction and Corporate history section be updated (replacing the existing text of these sections) to read as follows?:

G42 (previously known as Group42) is a technology holding company based in the UAE. It has multiple vertical businesses under its structure including oil and gas, smart cities, healthcare, and geospatial intelligence.
Corporate history
G42 was founded in 2018 (this previously read 2017, which is not correct, source: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/abu-dhabis-g42-forms-big-data-jv-with-israeli-defence-company-rafael-2021-04-19/) and is based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It comprises a multidisciplinary and diverse team of data scientists and engineers. The company performs applied AI research and development process on big data, AI, and machine learning via its various portfolio companies. G42 is chaired by the National Security Advisor of UAE, Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Peng Xiao is the Group CEO. (example source confirming Mr Xiao’s position https://www.thenationalnews.com/business/technology/2023/04/28/regulatory-oversight-called-for-as-generative-ai-takes-centre-stage/)
In 2020, Mubadala took a stake in the company, transferring ownership of two information technology companies, Injazat and Khazna to G42. (source https://www.reuters.com/article/mubadala-inv-g42-ma-idINL8N2HO1NV) In 2021, private equity firm Silver Lake invested $800 million for a minority stake, becoming G42’s first Western investor. (sources https://www.wsj.com/articles/silver-lake-invests-about-800-million-for-minority-stake-in-abu-dhabis-g42-11618394401, https://wired.me/business/silver-lake-funnels-800-million-into-abu-dhabi-based-g42/)

Can the Infobox also be updated as follows:

Areas served: Middle East and Africa, Central Asia, Europe and the US

Number of employees: 20,000 (source if needed https://businesschief.eu/leadership-and-strategy/abu-dhabi-health-tech-company-m42-now-biggest-in-region)

"Subsidiaries" changed to "Portfolio companies" for accuracy and including the following:

  • AIQ
  • Bayanat
  • G42 Cloud
  • G42 Healthcare
  • Hayat Biotech
  • IIAI
  • Injazat
  • Khazna
  • M42
  • Presight

I have wording and sources to provide proper subsections on these but for now it would be good to have them visible at a glance.

Finally, the "Partnership" section is also very out of date. For now, I suggest renaming it and splitting it into two separate sections, "Portfolio companies" containing Bayanat from the existing list, and "Partnerships and initiatives", containing Adalytyx, BGI Group, Rafael and IAI, and ToTok. Nanoscent and Alibaba Cloud can be removed as they were respectively a short-term collaboration and a small event from 2019 and not relevant for this article. Again, I have suggestions for expanding these lists but as a start having these in two separate, alphabetical lists would be easier for a reader to navigate.

Many thanks for your help in advance! Oddoso (talk) 16:40, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Oddoso It appears that certain elements in your request, such as the change to article name, information in the infobox and changes to the lead section have been approved and implemented, while other parts of the request have not. For a detailed description of the changes made, please consult the article's edit history. Regards,  Spintendo  09:40, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Spintendo thanks for responding, I have reviewed the changes made as you suggested. Thank you @Ptrnext for making those amends, especially the rename.
It would be helpful if you or Ptrnext could elaborate on why some of the changes have not been enacted. I have tried to follow neutral point of view recommendations for tone and have provided reliable sources where they would be necessary, so I'm not sure what the objection is, or if it was just an ommission and Ptrnext thought that other editors might chip in on the other parts?
Obviously you are all volunteers and so I appreciate the time you take to answer requests on topics that likely don't hold much interest for you, but as I am discouraged from adding material without raising a request, it would be helpful to know if there is a genuine objection or if I could just be adding the material myself if it does not violate community guidelines.
As the rearranging of the Partnership section is mostly just moving content around, which I can imagine is tedious when answering requests, would it be acceptable if I made this change myself to show the proposed restructuring? Thanks Oddoso (talk) 11:49, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Oddoso, yes, I only got around to implement the trivial ones. I noticed some basic changes were questionable (e.g. the 20,000 employees figure was for M42, not G42, according to your citation; not sure why you decided to remove the word controlled from "controlled and chaired by Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan" when he is the controlling shareholder.) When I have time, I can look at the remaining requests. If you prefer, you can open up the edit request again, so others can jump in possibly earlier than I can. Thanks, Ptrnext (talk) 04:03, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Ptrnext, I will reopen the request as you suggest.
To answer your questions, your (better) citation wasn't published when I was looking for a citation originally and because I already had one I wasn't looking for a new one to confirm this statistic when I submitted this request.
Secondly my proposed text for the Introduction and Corporate History section are more aimed at: indicating the up to date areas G42 works in; correcting applied versus fundamental research and not just focusing on IIAI when other portfolio companies contribute; and adding the CEO and two notable investors in. "controlled" can be kept in if you consider that is a better description. This sentence in particular needs updating: "The organization is oriented to development of AI industries in the government sector, healthcare, finance, oil and gas, aviation and hospitality". "oriented to development" sounds a bit promotional and not very grammatical which is why I phrased my proposed addition differently.
Could the following information be incorporated into your Cerebras addition?: "The planned network of supercomputers is called Condor Galaxy and will have combined 36 ExaFLOPs of AI compute, sufficient to impact the world wide inventory of AI compute." Here's a citation for the specs: https://spectrum.ieee.org/ai-supercomputer-2662304872
Am I good to go ahead with the proposed tidying of the Partnership section?
Thanks! Oddoso (talk) 17:15, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Oddoso With regards to the planned network of supercomputers, that would fall under WP:CRYSTALBALL. With regards to the companies that are in collaboration with the subject company, If you could provide the wikilinks for these companies in your reply message below, I think it would be important to establish their notability before mentioning them in the article. Regards,  Spintendo  02:08, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I implemented some of the changes. The change to the lede needs to be supported by sources, so I haven't done that. The infobox does not have a 'portfolio company' field, so I have left the subsidiary field as is (I do see G42 Healthcare referred to as a subsidiary in sources). The Cerebras one is WP:CRYSTAL as Spintendo pointed out, but I included specs for supercomputer that is installed. Thanks, Ptrnext (talk) 05:17, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Ptrnext and @Spintendo, thanks again for reviewing this. Ptrnext, regarding citations for the introduction, I believe that these are not required under MOS:LEADCITE? Hopefully my suggested additions below to the partnership list can speak for these. Spintendo, I have included wikilinks wherever there was an article to link to.
There are 7 portfolio companies and 10 partnerships to consider for inclusion (unfortunately the article is very out of date) so for ease of reading I will put these into two sections on this Talk page, "Portfolio companies", and "Partnerships and initiatives", reflecting the current article structure. I think the existing bullet points in the "portfolio companies" section would be more practical if converted to Level 3 headings, with associated partnerships of these companies listed as bullet points within these, so I have formatted them accordingly. Existing citations are indicated here by their current number in square brackets, new ones in supertext.
Entries already in the article are incorporated but some have proposed additional detail/rewrites. I have not reopened the request but if it would be helpful I can do that again and please let me know if I can help with anything at all. Oddoso (talk) 15:27, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Oddoso, your proposed change to the lead included the addition of "smart cities" which is not mentioned or sourced anywhere in the body, so we can't just add it. I also do not see any mentions of "oil and gas" businesses in the body. Yes, please add {{edit COI}} to the top of your two new requests. Ptrnext (talk) 18:41, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I will add those templates as requested. On your question, AIQ is a joint venture with ADNOC, so that should account for the oil and gas aspect (along with the Schlumberger efforts), and Injazat, G42 Cloud and Bayanat through TXAI all contribute to the smart cities vertical. I hope that helps! Oddoso (talk) 11:40, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
The current version of the page has no mentions of ADNOC/AIQ or how G42 Cloud/Injazat/Bayanat explicitly contribute to smart cities vertical. Your request below covers the ADNOC/AIQ aspect, but the smart cities vertical still needs to be explained and referenced before it can be added to the lead. Thanks, Ptrnext (talk) 19:35, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Your edit request could not be reviewed because the provided references are not formatted correctly.[a] The citation style predominantly used by the G42 article is Citation Style 1 (CS1). The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare URL's.[b] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. (See WP:CITEVAR.) In the extended section below titled Citation style, I have illustrated two examples: one showing how the edit request was submitted, and another showing how requests should be submitted in the future:
Citation style

In the example above there are three URL's provided with the claim statements, but these URL's have not been placed using Citation Style 1, which is the style predominantly used by the G42 article. Using this style, the WikiFormatted text should resemble the following:

Citation Style 1 formatting:

Notes

  1. ^ The fault for this formatting error may have originated with the automated prompts used by the edit request template, which asks for a COI editor to "supply the URL of any references used". While the resulting omission of information would not be the fault of the requesting COI editor, it nevertheless remains their responsibility to supply the references formatted in the style used by the article.
  2. ^ The use of bare URLs as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus.[1]

@Spintendo Thank you for you guidance on how to post the corrections without violating WP:REDACT, I have chosen to act on the following line from your guidance on my Talk page: "As an alternative, a new edit request displaying the correct use of ref notes could also have been posted after my reply". Hopefully the below meets that criteria of correct ref notes. To reinclude a deleted note, citation 20 does not like that the URL is missing a TLD, but that is the URL address.

These testing kits were objected to by the US intelligence and security officials, who raised concerns over privacy risks, citing that the gene-sequencing machines of the BGI Group could misuse the patients’ DNA. G42 is also reportedly working with BGI on a project for collecting genetic data of the UAE citizens to “generate the highest quality, most comprehensive genome data”.[14][15]
  • Cerebras: Cerebras partnered with G42 to deploy its AI supercomputers to create chatbots and to analyze genomic and preventive care data. The application was accused of being "used by the government of the United Arab Emirates to try to track every conversation, movement, relationship, appointment, sound and image of those who install it," in a New York Times exposé in December 2019.[21] Following the allegations, the application was removed by Apple and Google from their application stores. [note: G42 does not have a connection to Dark Matter, so I have suggested removing the related content]

Unable to review. Several issues remain with this request.

  1. In certain instances, more than one reference has been supplied to act as verification for one sentence. (For example, the requested text "A provider of big data analytics solutions, powered by AI, Presight made its IPO in 2023 with G42 as a majority shareholder.[21][22]".) As you can see, ref notes 21 and 22 are presented as the source verification for this claim. If both references equally confirm the information, then only one should be provided. (See WP:TOOMANYREFS.)
  2. Certian entities mentioned in the edit request appear not to have Wikilinks. These entities include the following:
    1. 42XFund
    2. ADAA
    3. Applied AI Company
    4. Adalytyx
    5. Benya Technologies
    6. Instadeep
  3. Certain [portions of the requested text contain inactivated ref notes (e.g., "On 14 January 2020, G42 announced the acquisition of Bayanat for Mapping and Surveying Services LLC, an end-to-end and custom provider of geospatial data products and services.[10][11][12] ".) Ref notes 10, 11, and 12 appear later in the requested text, but the COI editor is reminded that all instances of ref notes must be activated. Otherwise, the proposed text cannot be implemented. In the example just shown, there is nothing to confirm that the inactivated numbers 10, 11 and 12 are the same references indicated under the activated ref notes 10, 11 and 12 other than the fact that the numbers are the same. (See WP:MINDREADER.) Several examples of these inactivated ref notes remain in the requested text. These must be activated or removed from the requested text and placed in a new edit request posted below this reply post.

@Spintendo Please see an updated version of the request below with your most recent feedback taken into account. These changes include updates to company structure so please disregard the previous requests and feel free to archive them if you don’t need access to the previous discussions.

I have streamlined instances with two citations as requested in point 1 wherever the second source does not confirm something missing from the first.

I have included wikilinks wherever possible (point 2), but some entries do not have separate articles. I have redlinked these in the meantime if it helps, but while all of these instances have supporting citations, at the moment I believe most editors would consider these to be more appropriate for merging into this article rather than creating stubs. This could change down the line, of course.

On point 3 I have included the references from the existing page – I did not include these for review because I figured it was simpler for you to only have to consider new additions, but I take your point on numbers changing. These existing citations have a superscript note to distinguish them.

@User:STEMinfo I have removed the information that was supported by the sources you identified as press releases (both Zawya.com) from the request. Thank you for your helpful feedback and the note you added for the w.media citation.

These testing kits were objected to by the US intelligence and security officials, who raised concerns over privacy risks, citing that the gene-sequencing machines of the BGI Group could misuse the patients’ DNA. [36][37] (pre-existing references x2)

I have streamlined instances with two citations as requested in point 1 wherever the second source does not confirm something missing from the first. This makes it sound as if instances existed where two references were provided with neither of them verifying a particular claim.[a] If that were the case, then definitely they should be removed, but it's important to note that if a reference verifies only a fragment of a sentence — maybe the first half of a sentence— it should be placed at the end of where that information is mentioned in the sentence, after any commas, but before any terminating punctuation. While the Sun is very warm and very large,[1] it is still very far away from the Earth.[2]

References

  1. ^ 1 Size and Temperature Reference
  2. ^ 2 Distance Reference

In the red text above, there are two references. Together, they each reference something that the other lacks. But they can't be placed together at the end of the sentence. They need to be placed so that one speaks about the Sun's size and its temperature while the other only speaks about its distance. Both are kept in one sentence, but they're placed precisely where they belong so that it's clear which one covers which part specifically. I just want to make sure that's clear with this request.

Notes

  1. ^ I think the COI editor may have meant to say "wherever the second source confirms something missing from the first."

Found 2 instances where there were still two references where one would do, have removed what I considered the weaker of the the two in each case. Moved any remaining second references to the location of the information they supported which was not confirmed in the other. All other groups of references are pre-existing and not part of the request.Oddoso (talk) 15:42, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Looking at this, I'm seeing redlinks for many of these items, which indicates that their subjects are not notable in Wikipedia. In any event, I'm afraid that notability is not really the issue. When I look at the broader sense of these two sections, I get the feeling that they are essentially operating as a directory (the portfolio companies section) and a client list (the partnerships and initiatives section), which are frowned upon in business articles. Because of this, I'm not inclined to add these to the article. But I'd like another editors input. Regards,  Spintendo  22:38, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
