editI've put a POV tag on this page, not without a deal of thought. It seems that Quimby was difficult, but before he should be run down in Wikipedia, a few sources and references would be fair. Dave 23:22, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

POV ?
editAt present the full extent of the biography is:
Frederick C. "Fred" Quimby (31 July 1886 - 16 September 1965) was the producer of the MGM animated cartoon division, which most notably included the Tom and Jerry team of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. He was a repeated recipient of the Academy Award for Animated Short Film for the Tom and Jerry films. In their respective autobiographies, former directors stated they found this fact deeply aggravating. Many considered Quimby an obnoxious tyrant who needlessly interfered in their work while taking credit for it. Ironically, it is said that for a cartoon producer, Quimby lacked a sense of humour.
We cannot have such a short bio dominated by unsourced negative statements. It may be that Hanna and Barbera said that sort of thing - then they should be quoted directly.
Oh - and IMDB does not meet our requirements for a verifiable source.

- The book, Tom and Jerry: 50 Years of Cat and Mouse by T.R. Adams, from which I get much of my information, briefly mentions Quimby lacking, ironically for a cartoon producer, a sense of humour. MartinP1983 11:33, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Birth year
editOn 27 September 2009, this edit was made. Previously, the footnote made some sense. But ever since then, it hasn’t. I’m very surprised nobody’s noticed it. That’s one thing. The other issue is that if 1886 is supported by only a minority of sources, why are we favouring it over 1883, which apparently a majority of sources have? Or had. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 13:07, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
- Good point. Apparently, I added the footnote here, based on whatever information I had at that time - when, being quite a noobie, I was fairly careless about referencing. His gravestone says 1886, so I suggest we stick with that unless we can find a majority of other reliable sources that give a different date. I'll remove the footnote. The Simpsons
editIs it worth mentioning that Mayor Quimby from The Simpsons is named after him? 194.75.128.200 (talk) 12:30, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Is that true? This site states: "Joe Quimby's name partly comes from NW Quimby Street in Portland, Oregon, the hometown of show creator Matt Groening." We need references in any case. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:39, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
