Prohibition against using regular knives

edit

There is a Western cultural norm against using regular table knives on the fish. The norm is not rooted in any practical considerations (using other silver tools would be OK from the taste perspective), but was nonetheless introduced sometime in the 18th century, as far as I can recall, as a "class marker". I've seen some culturological research on the subject, but was not able to re-discover it while writing the article. Any hints will be appreciated. Викидим (talk) 01:57, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

No actual hints, @Викидим, but how interesting that class marker isn't a blue link. Multiple articles use it that way, which makes me think there may not be an article at some other term for this. Seems like there should be an article. Nice work on this article, btw. Valereee (talk) 17:13, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Maybe status symbol? Valereee (talk) 17:18, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Class marker is narrower than the status symbol, IMO it is a status symbol that separates the externally recognized elite (and can be an act of not using something sophisticated, cf. U and non-U English). I am planning to eventually write some text on the subject, probably as a section of the Status symbol (that needs a better treatment anyhow). Working on it: Class marker (sociology). Викидим (talk) 06:21, 12 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Fishing knife

Since the {{distinguish}} was removed, a note will be useful here: the fishing knife is a completely different tool used for, well, actual fishing. Викидим (talk) 22:03, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
