I'd remove the references, there's no point to indicate an external reference which requires IEEE login (so you have to pay) in a "Free Encyclopedia" like Wiki is....

Gabricis, I like your idea about free content. Nevertheless, please, do not remove the references. The life at the Earth is generally expensive, but in includes the free round trip around the Sun early. The scientific journals are generally expensive, but they provide the free abstracts; and you can easy communicate the authors and ask for the off-print; in the most of cases, authors are happy to send their offprints and and it is free.
