use of Mfengu and amaFengu

edit

It is usual to refer a Frenchman as a Frenchman and not un Français, and the same would go for a Spaniard, we would refer to him as a Spaniard and not un español. It would be perfectly reasonable in the Xhosa wikipedia to refer to the Fingoes or the Fengu people as amaFengu, in fact it would be very odd to refer to them using the English name. I have changed the article to make it more grammatical and idiomatic.Wayne Jayes (talk) 12:14, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Fengu

edit

The Fengu people are a tribe, the name does not mean "wandering" as it has been propagated. To wander in isiXhosa is "ukuyabula", "ukuzula" or "ukubhaca" depending in context. In the case of the Fengu tribe, it would be "ukubhaca" based on the circumstances on which they left their homeland in Natal due to the Dutch-Zulu alliance invasion of 1898 - 1910.

AmaMfengu are actually a tribe with a centralized kingship above the many clanchiefs. Lwando Ngala (talk) 22:11, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
