I seem to recall that the character was named after "Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy--Hugh Mulcahy of the Phillies (which may account for the later use of the character as being from Philadelphia). In The novel MASH by Richard Hooker, Hawkeye Pierce addresses Father Mulcahy as “Losing Preacher”.
