Dates of Expo

edit

According to the official website listed, the Expo will open on Oct 20, 2020 (the same as advertised the past 5 years), and lasting 173 days (closing on Apr 10/11, 2021). This is not the same as what is listed on this page. I don't know if the dates have changed, but if not, can someone fix it here. SDSpivey (talk) 03:06, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Improvements required to this page

edit

Hi fellow Wikipedia editors.

This article is not only out of date but requires dedicated editing to get it up to Wikipedia standards. It is noted that this an event in the making and is in its nature 'forward-looking'. I would like to suggest a few broad updates:

  • Context: Currently the article lacks adequate background — how it was selected, other countries it competed against, etc.
  • Background: Instead of "organisation", these details should be included as "background" to include size, participation (broadly, this is already highlighted separately which is good), and thematic details, as per https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/World_Expo_88
  • Themes: Per my knowledge, there are three themes that the Expo is positioned around. These should be explained in detail that is widely available. The current article also excludes many of the notable architects, as well as specific details about the themes.
  • Pavilions: The pavilions need to be covered, which would include the thematic and country pavilions.
  • Legacy: The post-event plans for the expo are widely publicized and need to be included.
  • Current events: There are various current events that are relevant to the reader, e.g. volunteer program, site accessibility, ticketing and mascots.

Then there are sections that are unassociated with the expo (e.g. property prices) that need to be integrated better or entirely relooked. --Bob Paulsen (talk) 20:00, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

“ It is the first time that a World Exposition has been postponed to a later date rather than cancelled”

edit

This might be true of fairs sanctioned by the current governing body, but cannot be true of all world expos. Wasn’t the World’s Columbian Exposition originally scheduled for 1892, and postponed to 1893??? SecretName101 (talk) 03:49, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

[[SecretName 101]], the source I found was a bit unclear. It states that the fair "dedicated in Chicago" on October 21, 1892 but later states that the opening occurred on May 1, 1893. See https://guides.loc.gov/chronicling-america-worlds-fair-chicago. Jurisdicta Jurisdicta (talk) 16:45, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think we should just remove that sentence. The issue with the World's Columbian Exposition is kind of complicated. It was delayed in the sense that it opened after the event it was meant to commemorate. But as mentioned, it was nominally dedicated in 1892. And I'm pretty sure the planners knew from an early date that the expo wouldn't be ready until 1893. Zagalejo (talk) 15:11, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Massive amounts of poorly sourced puffery and trivia

edit

This article is filled to the brim with poorly sourced puffery for the authoritarian regime in the UAE, as well as absurd trivia about the event. The content is sourced to Expo website itself or to news outlets that operate in a country without a free media or free speech. I sought to remove the most egregious examples of this kind of content, but it was promptly reverted by the editor 'Gorebath'.[1] The poorly sourced puffery and trivia should be removed. "This article is filled to the brim with poorly sourced puffery for the authoritarian regime in the UAE, as well as absurd trivia about the event"
Please indicate where this puffery to the authoritarian regime in UAE is and I will remove them.
"The content is sourced to Expo website itself or to news outlets that operate in a country without a free media or free speech"
This is not a sole reason to remove cited sources from Wikipedia. If you have concerns about a particular source or statement which is non-neutral please indicate it here so we can review it. Thanks Gorebath (talk) 02:22, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I am absolutely not going to run every single sentence of poorly sourced authoritarian propaganda by you before I remove it. That is just not how it's going to be. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 03:04, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Material violating wiki-policy should definitely be removed, however for material which users may disagree with this is the process of how consensus building is done. Gorebath (talk) 04:13, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Snooganssnoogans I am absolutely not going to run every single sentence of poorly sourced authoritarian propaganda... so you suggest we do that for you? Could you show a couple of example at the very least?--LostCitrationHunter (talk) 16:01, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
