Why would one put the members of a formation in alphabetical order and not stratigraphic order? Anyone can alphabetize that's common knowledge, the sequence is not common knowledge, though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.111.167.200 (talk) 15:23, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Most likely because that's the way the USGS presents them in the ref used. Having said that, I agree that strat order would make more sense - need to dig up a reference for that... Vsmith (talk) 22:56, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Revision planned

I did a little fixup, but this article, its parent the San Rafael Group, and the whole Colo Plateau Jurassic needs work. In particular, they need revision in light of Ron Blakey's beautiful paleogeographic reconstructions -- see eg this early Jurassic (180 mya) reconstruction in Navajo Erg time -- the erg before the San Rafael]. The recon I need is in Blakey & Ranney's book, Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau (preview): p. 76 shows the 160 mya Entrada dune field south and east of the Sundance Sea. The placeholder blog I cite has a decent discussion and a part of the 160 mya map -- this might actually work for a permanent source, as the geology is sound. Click to enlarge. Incidentally, the book is spectacular.

Anyway -- I'll be thinking about the best way to tackle this. I know Blakey slightly, and Ranney a bit better. Hmm. Stay tuned. I'll at least get the stratigraphy sorted, first thing! --Pete Tillman (talk) 00:15, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
