editStratys 19:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC): This article makes no direct reference to Diffuser Enlargers. I think it should be more emphasized the differences between the two kinds of enlargers. Diffuser enlargers scatter light before it its the negative surface, producing a softer image. This makes the condenser enlarger less forgiving to scratches on the negative. Diffuser enlargers don't have built-in contrast filters. They usually have a filter drawer to place the filters.
Where did the term enlarger originate?
editI have know about enlargers and worked with them since the early 60's. I never considered the word enlarger. I just used them. Now, I wonder where the term orginated and how we come to use the term enlarger as a piece of equipment. I know that the enlarger make images larger. How come the prefix "en" has been added. Is enlarger French, English, or some other language? —Preceding unsigned comment added by ECFinley (talk • contribs) 20:04, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

This article would be better with some historical information.
editOn the history of the enlarger http://www.mpritchard.com/photohistory/history/enlargers.htm has some reliable information, though US-centric I think, to which http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_e/0_early_photography_-_enlargers.htm adds some information leading as far back as Henry Fox Talbot, while Hannavay's Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography provides what I think would be the most reliable information. As I'm writing about this I will come back and add a new section, though in the meantime might some other editor like to fill this gap???
companies
editDurst has been 100% bankrupt and out of operation in North America for over 10 years now (2020), and the italian branch which still operates have not supported enlarger (or other analog machines) with parts for at least 10 years (since around 2010). Lucky (Chinese company) is most certainly not owned by Kenko (Japanese consortium). LPL still makes enlargers, parts and service is readily available from the company in Japan. DeVere production has been restarted in China in ~2014 and machines and parts are readily available. Beseler is alive and well (2020) and makes enlargers in all formats. Kaiser is still making enlargers. Time to update the article.
