What an interest character; the change from being a slave owner prewar to being somewhat of an advocate for freed slaves afterwards is quite jarring!
Lead
- Reads OK
Biography
- As a broader suggestion, a couple of subheadings would be nice; perhaps 'Military career' or 'Civil War' could be one?
- Gantt had ambitions to become a prominent figure,...: do the sources specify prominent in what context? Political, legal or just in society in general?
- gave him an adequate opportunity for that.: suggest "gave him appropriate opportunities." (the "for that" doesn't flow well to me).
- Gantt never took office in the United States House of Representatives, and was also elected...: it seems that this recites contrasting facts so rather than "and was also elected", a "but was elected" seems more appropriate.
- Gantt was badly wounded during an artillery duel.[10][2] : cites out of order if that is a thing for you
- Do the sources specify why Polk's recommendation for Gantt's promotion to brigadier general was declined?
- In this role, he oversaw the relation...: should that be relations (plural)?
- sometimes carried seven weapons: seven or several (seven seems very precise!)
- Is there anything to suggest his advocacy for freed slaves was possibly driven by his desire to be seen as prominent/famous (perhaps infamous is more appropriate given Arkansas is a southern state) or was it genuine charitable work?
Other stuff
- No spot checks done, happy to AGF on the sourcing given nominator's history
- Sources themselves look reliable, being mostly university presses
- Earwig tool identifies the Finley article on the Encyclopedia of Arkansas as having 24% similarity. Reviewing this, it looks to be based mostly on common terms e.g. 1850 Nashville Convention and titles of shared sources.
