Merger proposal
editI propose that Great Edstone be merged into Edstone. The two articles cover the same topic (or clearly overlapping topics). The title of the final article is to be decided; according to the OS map, at least, "Edstone" is the name of the civil parish, and "Great Edstone" is the name of the principal settlement therein. I have been considering the merge of the two as well. The final article title could be "Edstone (Civil Parish)"? When researching this area I have been careful not to mistake the area for an Edstone located in Warwickshire. Therefore if a future Wikipedia page is created of that area, having this page as "Edstone (Civil Parish)" should stop any confusion? It would probably be better to merge the Great Edstone into Edstone and remove Great Edstone from Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tom.Moss453 (talk • contribs) 16:03, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
- I don't entirely agree with it, but the usual practice here is not to "pre-disambiguate" titles of articles about UK places—that is, as long as this is the only Wikipedia article about an Edstone, not to include a parenthetical identifier such as "civil parish" (note the lowercase) in the title. Only if someone writes an article about the Warwickshire place at some time in the future (presumably at a title such as "Edstone, Warwickshire") might there be some discussion about moving this one to "Edstone (civil parish)", "Edstone, North Yorkshire", or similar, if it's judged that this Edstone is not the "primary topic" for the "Edstone" name. Reading through the Great Edstone page the information hasn't got any references and some of it is opinion. Therefore I don't think the information from that page should be merged. If the sources of the information on the Great Edstone page can be found then the information can always be inserted at a later date. I have briefly tried to obtain where the information has come from but cannot find it. I am unfamiliar with the merge process so I am currently not sure if you would request Great Edstone to be deleted or if it just remains there?
