Some remarks of appreciation
editI first encountered Dover through their clip-art books. A few years later, as I became an avid book collector, I discovered their extensive line of reprints. Then, when I studied math in college, I was pleased to discover they also have a line of mathematical texts. I guess this posting is little more than a free plug, but what the heck. -Sewing - talk 03:48, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I think it's worth an entry. I love their music texts and other notable publishers have books. To do: A history of the company, list of what they publish.--Sketchee 03:35, Dec 5, 2004 (UTC)
- I can also attest to Dover's excellent range of mathematics texts. They carry many Soviet authors (for me, Kolmogorov) simply not available anymore in English from anyone else. AFAIK they are the Penguin of the maths world. 118.90.48.231 (talk) 01:50, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Another free plug: I owe it to Dover that I was able to read Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation forty-some years ago. I can never thank them enough. Also, it is frustrating to find that many Dover publications are no longer in print.Lestrade (talk) 23:20, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Lestrade
Binding change
editAt some point, most Dover editions ceased to be sewn. Does anyone have a good reference on when this happened, &c? —SlamDiego 10:47, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Must have been the late 1960. The early 70s books had a problem with losing pages and the plastic coating on the covers delaminating. They seem to have fixed this. Erikdhanson 08:22, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Nah, most of them were still sewn together in the '70s. (I know, 'cause I was buying 'em.) I do recall that delamination problem, tho'. —SlamDiego 04:57, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
naming
editAnyone know why they chose the name Dover? —Tamfang 18:08, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
It most likely has to do with the apartment the founders lived and worked from in Forest Hills NY in 1941, at least according to their catalog. Space Commander Plasma (talk) 05:19, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Specifically, the words The Dover Building were set in stone or brick over the building's door. J S Ayer (talk) 02:17, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
Paper dolls
editWe just received in the mail a Dover catalog of paper dolls representing historical figures, literary figures, the fashions of famous fashion designers and many different cultural groups.
