It's ROOTLETS which emerge DIRECTLY from spinal cord, not roots.
editI know it would seem to make sense that there would be roots which directly emerge from the spinal cord, but as far as I know it's really rootlets (a small number of small bundles of axons) which emerge directly from the spinal cord, and then merge together to form the root.
