Talk:Diocese of Aleria
'Residential Diocese'
edit'Residential diocese' is not official terminology. All bishops everywhere were supposed to be residential. The practices of the Roman Curia over the centuries (e.g. using bishops as legates and nuncios, and awarding dioceses as though they were benefices) weakened the expectation. It was the Council of Trent that demanded that bishops reside in their dioceses, but even then the practice was not universal and the popes granted dispensations all the time, for periods of years. But there was no such thing as a 'non-residential diocese'. 'Titular Bishoprics' are assigned in places where there is no longer a functioning diocese. Please don't confuse people by inventing new terminology. Explain the old, if necessary. --Vicedomino (talk) 01:13, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
