Engagement to Muhammad Ali

edit

I was watching a documentary titled "Muhammad Ali: The Whole Story" and Dee Dee Sharp was interviewed. She goes into detail about her engagement with Ali. The article states "singer Dee Dee Sharp (who was planning to marry Ali before he converted to the Muslim faith)"[1]

You can also watch the documentary on YouTube. She talks about the engagement @7:15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVskzafcP08Twixister (talk) 16:36, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

The reference added to the article mentions none of this - WP:V.--Egghead06 (talk) 16:41, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
The article states "singer Dee Dee Sharp (who was planning to marry Ali before he converted to the Muslim faith)." She mentions the details with Malcolm X in the documentary. Check the link I posted above @7:15.Twixister (talk) 16:48, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Please note that you have provided the entire extent of the Tribune commentary on this topic. You'll need to cite the documentary, presuming it is a reliable source, if you want to add additional material. As it stands, I could plan to marry Marilyn Monroe, but that wouldn't make us engaged.  . 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 17:30, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
How do I cite a video? is IMDB sufficient? I mentioned the documentary. I'll revise the wording.Twixister (talk) 17:43, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Use Template:Cite AV media. Please don't cite as "YouTube" because they aren't the original producers. Be sure it meets WP:RS requirements. Also, if the uploader to YouTube is violating copyright laws, you should not link to (or mention) YouTube at all. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 17:46, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I used IMDB to cite the documentary. The article I cited is about the documentary as well.Twixister (talk) 17:54, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid that doesn't work at all. It isn't IMDB that says what you claim. You need to cite the source of your claim. Please see Referencing for Beginners, I've found it very useful. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 18:21, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
It seems to me to be entirely valid to state that, in the documentary, Sharp claimed that she was planning to marry Ali, using the published Chicago Tribune article as the source for that. But it's not of sufficient notability to be in the lead, and we should not be referencing either video documentaries or IMDb directly. Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:32, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
