I work in the Kennedy Center Archives, and we are proposing changes in good faith to clarify, update, and provide context to information on this page. Please let me know if I can provide more information relating to suggested changes, but as per WP:SCOIC, I will minimize my participation in the discussion and defer to editors' assessments of appropriate changes.
Career
− | She is the first woman to head the large, partially federally-funded, performing arts organization that includes many different types of performances and | + | She is the first woman to head the large, partially federally-funded, performing arts organization that includes many different types of performances and programs, as well as being a presidential memorial. |
This addition provides context about the insitutiton Rutter leads, since its memorial aspect differs from her earlier career experience in performing arts institutions.
− | In the beginning of her tenure, she | + | In the beginning of her tenure, she led the project to create the REACH, the first physical expansion of the Kennedy Center. The $250 million project was based on the assumption that people would want to meet with artists in a more casual setting which consists of a large and outstanding outdoor space designed by Steven Holl. |
- The start of the REACH expansion (2013) pre-dated Rutter's tenure (2014), so it is not accurate to say she started the REACH, but rather that she led the project once she became the Kennedy Center president.
- The text should clarify that the REACH is the first "physical" expansion to differentiate between expansion of programming areas and campus expansions.
- The text about Nixon's presidency is irrelevant because the construction happening in the early 1970s was the original construction of the building, not an expansion of an existing building.
- The cost of the REACH was $250 million as reported here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/keithflamer/2019/09/30/kennedy-center-opens-new-performing-arts-wing-in-washington-d-c/.
- "Space" is more consistent with architect Steven Holl's descriptions of the REACH as written in the Description section here: https://www.stevenholl.com/project/reach-kennedy-center-expansion/.
− | In 2018, Rutter launched DIRECT CURRENT, | + | During Rutter’s tenure, she has expanded Kennedy Center programming to better represent diversity in the arts. In 2016 with Reneé Fleming and Dr. Francis Collins, she started Sound Health, a partnership between the Center and the National Institutes of Health that explores the connection between the arts and wellbeing and introduces new voices of doctors, scientists, and researchers to the performing arts space. In 2018, Rutter launched DIRECT CURRENT, a festival of contemporary culture which focused on new and interdisciplinary art. In 2019, Rutter introduced Social Impact as a central area of programming focused on the power of art to build community and create change. Over her tenure, she has also expanded the Center’s programming, notably bringing in Q-Tip as the first Artistic Director of Hip Hop Culture. |
- The first recommended sentence acts as a topic sentence/summary of the addional sentences to follow. See citations for each section below.
- Rutter's work on Sound Health is reported here: https://www.nccih.nih.gov/grants/concepts/the-science-of-music-interventions-a-sound-health-initiative and https://www.amacad.org/person/deborah-f-rutter
- DIRECT CURRENT is no longer running so the verb should be changed to past-tense, and "annual" should be removed since it is not an active program.
- Creation of Social Impact programming is reported here: McGlone, P. (2020, Jul 10). Kennedy center maps out venture to promote anti-racism. The Washington Post Retrieved from https://www.proquest.com/newspapers/kennedy-center-maps-out-venture-promote-anti/docview/2421655456/se-2

- Hi,
- Thanks for your request above.
- I'm happy for you to proceed to make the edits above, with the exception of the long one from
During Rutter’s tenure, she has expanded Kennedy Center programming
toto build community and create change
. I'm concerned that section consists of wording that reads like advertising copy, that it is promotional in intent and that it relates to matters that are not of encyclopaedic relevance (or, at the very least, matters that are given undue prominence). The final sentence of that section, however, is fine. (Note that a wiki-link can be included to Q-Tip (musician).) - I would be happy to look at a revised proposal in relation to the greater part of that section, but in the meantime you are free to make the other changes and insert the relevant sourcing.
- Best wishes, Axad12 (talk) 10:51, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- I've made the changes you've approved and understand your reasoning for removing the section you suggested. Thanks for your feedback!
