'defending' champion

edit

Is Nicole Cooke the 'defending' champion? She is certainly the reigning champion, but surely we don't know she is the defending champion unless and until she is selected by British Cycling to defend her title.

For example, Manchester United were the reigning FA Cup winners in 2000, but since they didn't enter the 2000 edition, they were never the 'defending' champion.

Clearl, same applies to Samual Sanchez in the men's race.

In short, I think the correct phrase is probably "current" or "reigning" champion, until such time as that person is selected to compete in the same event in 2012.

Agree. Corrected to reflect that. --Tone 21:13, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The existing photo is great and should probably be more prominent, but if there is space for more photos, I took a photo which includes some of the support vehicles as well as some riders. "Same time", to be precise. Have added some text above table to explain. (adapted from corresponding article from 2008). Qwfp (talk) 10:14, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
