Churchill in Parliament

edit

I have removed the following statement which has stood since 2006, with a citation needed tag since October 2023:

"In 1941, Winston Churchill gave a promise in Parliament that land would be returned to its owners after the Second World War, when it was no longer required for the purpose for which it had been bought but the promise was reneged on."

I have searched Hansard and failed to find such a public undertaking.[1] This is not to say that it doesn't exist, and certainly may also have been in another forum, but I have been unable to find it.

The original reference is archived, and includes no such statement.

Modern mentions very likely derive from this article, for example here.

There is a mention of the matter by then PM Churchill on 27 July 1954 here. Also a much longer debate on 20 July 1954, here.

£32,000

edit

It looks like the £32,000 was spent on equipping the land as a working farm, not a price. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 23:29, 22 August 2024 (UTC).Reply
