editI deleted this:
- "During the entire run of the series, the Germans never caught on to the fact that Lt Hanley's radio callsign was "Checkmate King 2" and Sergeant Saunders' was "White Rook". In reality, the callsigns would have been changed periodically.
- "==Trivia==
- "Combat! the TV series lasted from Fall 1962 to Summer 1967. Yet, World War II in France and Germany for the American Infantry, where the action was set lasted from the Normandy Invasion June 6, 1944 to (V-E) Victory in Europe Day May 7, 1945."
In the first, & obvious, case, it was a TV series, not real life, & viewers couldn't be expected to know, or care, the calls were unchanged; more important, the writers obviously didn't. (Rabb was Batman 1 in several episodes of JAG, probably for the same reasons.) Trivia? More like "who cares?". Show the significance or leave it out. Or mention M*A*S*H went them one better, lasting three times longer than the Korean War. Trekphiler 09:23, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- Despite the solemn assurances by the producers of advice from 'military advisers', the show contains so many inaccuracies and improbabilities that it can only be considered as a 'military Western'. It is entertainment, not history. 'Combat' caters to what the TV public have read and heard about war, its image, and its myths, not its horrid and uncomfortable truths. How come these guys never carry, but never run out of ammo? How come they never bear heavy packs, like real infantrymen? How come they wear no unit badges? Why do the Wehrmacht troops display the skirmishing tactics of a bunch of Girl Scouts, instead of being the most dangerous and professional opponent you can imagine?
The show was filmed in the same area as M*A*S*H, so you see the same hills in the background as the opening titles with helicopters. You also see Saunders and Kirby and company shoot from behind eucalyptus trees, which were introduced to California from Australia in the 19th Century but were quite unknown in France... and so on.121.44.19.209 (talk) 08:51, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
On a more substantive note, I've heard it got cancelled, despite hi (or adequate) ratings, due to the unpopularity of Vietnam. Can anybody confirm? Trekphiler 06:14, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- The reasons for show cancellations are usually due to some nervous jerk from the head-office accounts department giving a gloomy prognostication about syndication earnings. Remember always, Hollywood is only about money. 121.44.19.209 (talk) 08:51, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
Contrary to the claim that Hanley, Saunders and their men "never run out of ammo," in one episode they did run out of ammo, surrendered to the Germans, and were put in a POW transit camp. They escaped, of course, but they were captured because they ran out of ammo. Someone who knows more about the show than I do will be able to add the name of the episode where this happened. 66.162.249.170 (talk) 22:45, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Combat
editCombat is a great show. I can't believe they left Combat out all the time and it was a #1 show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.189.130.147 (talk) 19:12, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Lyrics of "Combat!" Theme Song?
editI'm not sure if this is official or not but it seems that the Theme Song for Combat! had an unused set of lyrics titled "These are the men of the infantry..." which were written by someone named Leonard Adelson.
- Proudly we bear the name of the Infantry,
- Knowing we share the fame of the Army Infantry,
- Where-ever liberty's battle must be won,
- The Infantry has gone, and so it shall go on.
- Where there's a job to be done is where we'll be,
- For we are the fighting men of the Infantry.

- Nevermind. They're official. I found a citable source to confirm it right here. http://www.jodavidsmeyer.com/combat/episodes/combat_theme_song.htm

Lili Marleen
editHmmmm. Sounds an awful lot like the melody of Lili Marleen to me. Sca (talk) 19:25, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Stars
editFor the record (in light of a recent edit summary comment), both Morrow and Jason were the top-billed stars of the show. They were contractually granted top billing for alternate episodes, each taking second billing for every *other* episode. Morrow quickly and clearly became the focal lead of the show, but as far as starring status goes, it is as describe here.Monkeyzpop (talk) 21:24, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
References
editIs there a valid reason for two References sections?--Gaarmyvet (talk) 21:23, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
reference note 3 does not reflect the content stated
editThe Fan FAQ makes mention only of the commercially-released videotaped episodes - there is no mention of DVD releases at all. Technically this should be removed ... if anyone has another source that can back up the claim that the DVD releases - individual and the complete series box - are taken from the syndicated time-compressed versions, please say so ASAP. Trivia
editthis part:
Sergeant Saunders wears a camo pattern helmet cover. The camo is parachute silk and not the pattern used by the US marines in the Pacific campaign.
The show did not take place in the pacific, am I missing something? 68.103.214.82 (talk) 03:55, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
A Walk In the Sun
editThe pilot episode (ep. 11) of "Combat!" is a loose remake of "A Walk In the Sun" by Harry Brown (book and movie). There's the beach landing, the orchard, the tank, the farmhouse objective.... I think this should be mentioned. 50.202.81.2 (talk) 20:47, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Eric Braeden aka Hans Gudegast also appeared in "Combat!"
editI know (from watching the program) that Eric Braeden aka Hans Gudegast -- later to achieve fame as Hauptmann Dietrich in "Rat Patrol" and then as Victor Newman in "The Young and The Restless" -- was also a guest star, or at least a named actor, in at least two episodes, although that may not elevate him to "guest star" status. To avoid accusations that I committed the sin of "original research" I won't add his name to the main article. 2605:E000:CB02:1A00:B130:3ACF:5E85:DCBD (talk) 08:00, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
Authenticity
edit"The uniforms were so precisely recreated with correct pipings and insignias" ... typical Ami bragging, and as always bullshit. Pathetic 1935 uniforms. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:E2:3716:8FAF:45B8:D566:67F4:7874 (talk) 16:32, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
