Origin of the Pronunciation
editWhat is the origin of Cholmondeley being pronounced Chumly? 76.126.15.78 (talk) 03:19, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's likely from Anglo-Norman, like most of these counter-intuitive British pronunciations. The locals couldn't pronounce the funny new French names properly and instead invented their own ways of saying them; see also Belvoir Castle ("beaver"), St John (name) ("sin-jin"), Mainwaring ("mannering"), etc. JonChappleTalk 09:27, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
