Update of Routes
editCUMTD changed almost all of it's routes this past year. Most notably (for college students) 22 and 26 were eliminated. --71.113.129.238 (talk) 05:44, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

- thanks. One of my broad wikipedia interests is transportation, especially the history of railroads and aviation. The Illinois Terminal Railroad Company seems like it has a very interesting history, I might tackle that soon Fawcett5 02:11, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Unlike most of the US, the midwest actually has an extensive and affordable rail system, so it's a particularly interesting area. It's also notable that the railroads were the genesis of many of the cities in this region. Champaign was created as West Urbana when Urbana would have nothing to do with the railroad. Riders Per Year
editIt would be nice if the 10 million riders per year figure had a reference. There are only 180,000 people the entire county. 10 million per year is more than 27,000 riders per day. The population of Urbana, Illinois is listed as only 36,000. The 10 million riders number seems a bit high to me. Of course the number could come from the MTD itself, I wouldn't be surprised if they count all the elementary school students on school buses twice per day or UIUC students who ride 10 times a day get counted 10 times. --Dual Freq 23:41, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

- So, is the 10 million number accurate? If so, where did the number come from? DID it come from the MTD? Are you agreeing with one person getting counted 10 times per day? - I am agreeing that one gets counted again every time they board a bus. The 10 million number sounds about right, and is probably from the MTD. If you're not convinced, consider all the students who ride the MTD multiple times a day, plus every trip taken by some people to and from their jobs each day. It adds up. - The MTD doesn't separate the ridership numbers for its normal community service, which require an I-Card or fare to ride, and its campus routes, which are free to use to the public. The 10 million rider number is severely inflated by students riding short distances to classes in packed buses, while the buses on the normal Champaign/Urbana routes are often circling around almost vacant. Only a very small percentage of Champaign/Urbana residents actually use the CU-MTD regularly for work commuting or trips, it is mainly a way to avoid paying for parking on campus or during Illini sporting events. --warningpunk 19:09, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

- Yep, based on living and working in Champaign/Urbana for 5 years and taking every bus route to/from the Illinois Terminal, as well as being as a student at the University of Illinois. If that's an unverifiable "assertion", then I'm guilty as charged. Wikipedia is known to have intentional/unintentional biases based on the people that continually edit content to their liking and that's the reason that it can't be depended on for accurate information...I guess you'll just continue to perpetuate that. - 1) No personal attacks. If you can't argue your point without assuming that I'm perpetuating a bias or that I work for the MTD, then don't bother contributing. Do it again, and I'll take this to AN/I. I have very little tolerance for drive-by slandering from SPA's.
- 2) I've lived in CU all of my life, went to UIUC, and ride the MTD every day. The regular routes are most certainly not circling around almost vacant. But that's not relevant to the discussion at hand
- 3) Your claim is unverifiable and original research, and therefore, does not meet the threshold of inclusion in Wikipedia. Just because you lived here a few years and rode the bus sometimes does not make YOU a reliable source. Please familiarize yourself with these policies. Thank you! - My point is that those numbers are inflated, I have the official ridership numbers for each of the campus and community routes from when I did research as a writer at the DI. I don't know what any of your abbreviations mean, and I don't think its slander to reject the MTD's justification of charging $38 a semester to students who may or may not use the service. Going off of a sentence in the "About Us" section doesn't exactly qualify as a deep, verifiable source either. And lastly, if you have lived in C/U all of your life and taken the buses, you would know of the disparity in the ridership between campus and community routes. [reset indent] Again, please read up on WP:V, specifically the opening sentence: The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth—that is, whether readers are able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether we think it is true." Your claims are not verifiable unless you can show where those numbers are published and able to be accessed by anybody who wants to get them. The "about us" section isn't the greatest source, but it is reliable enough and more importantly, verifiable. Numbers you have for research you did while writing for a college newspaper are original research, and therefore aren't acceptable. Your attempts at "telling the truth" are completely baseless without some method of independent verification. Fatal Accident
editCan someone get some verification of the 1970s claim? As far as I know, Jeffers was the first fatality in CUMTD's history. Thesquire 01:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
article states that there hadn't been a fatality in 34 years. article states first pedestrian fatality in MTD's history. The one from the 70's must not have been a pedestrian. --Dual Freq 02:05, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
- I've noted in the article that the listed fatalities were the first pedestrian ones in the MTD's history. I'd also be surprised if the MTD actually went that long without a bus vs. vehicle fatality, but that's just me -- Thesquire (talk - contribs) 02:52, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
