One force or two?

Please resolve contradiction:

• Clearance diver#Canada says that Canada's clearance divers use firearms and explosive weapons. This implies that they also serve as combat frogmen.
• Frogman#Canada says that Canada's combat frogmen are separate from Canada's clearance divers.

Navydiving comments

Here is the skinny - Clearance divers are "not" combat frogmen. They simply maintain weapons proficiency as required by CF universality of service requirements. That is to say all those who wear a CF uniform, save those discipline like chaplain that are exempt from handling firearms,are exepted to be proficient in weapons handling. Explosive weapons are limited to the EOD tools they employ for their EOD/IEDD functions - not an offensive function. CDs do serve in Afgahnistan for their EOD skills and carry firearms for self defence only and are expected to pull their weight in a fire-fight along with anyone else...

Canada does not have combat frogmen. We have Combat Divers whose role is not an affensive one but rather a support function. They can employ demolitions and are mainly used for engineering, search and recovery type operations. They have also been used as safety numbers for army vehicle fording exercises. There are some sexy videos floating around of these guys surfacing with their weapons at the ready but that is mainly PR cowboy kind of stuff. That is not their mandate...

The types of divers that exist in the CF right now are: Clearance Diving Officers (I just retired and wrote the Concept of Ops ref document all navy divers operate under) (Technically a SubClassification of MARS offier but many such as myself are employed as CLDO in a full time capacity for their career.

• Clearance Divers (Full time occupation)
• Port Inspection Divers (Reserve Diving Occupation)
• Ships Team Divers (part-time SCUBA or as we call it CABA Divers)
• Air Force SAR TECHS (Search and Rescue Technicians (all intially trained to dive-Diving is a part-time function and not an occupation)
• Army Combat Divers (Diving is a part-time function and not an occupation)
• JTF2 Divers (Arguably the frogmen mentioned above) with a combat function (Diving is a part-time function and not a primary occupation or function)
• WANNABE Divers (Everyone else in the military

Page title

A point of note added to my above.. technically this page should be titled Canadian Forces Divers. The term Canadian Armed Forces is actually a slang. Canada's military is know as Canadian Forces or CF for short vice what is titled here... Navydiving sends. Will have more to contribute once I figure out the protocols for being a contributor on WIKIPEDIA (yeah I'm a newbie) - Navydiving (talk) 22:02, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

The article Canadian Forces states that "Canadian Armed Forces" is the official name, and documentation seems to use the 2 titles interchangeably.

However, this article's name should be capitalised regardless - to either Canadian Forces Divers or Canadian Armed Forces Divers (or possibly "Diving" instead of "Divers" ?). Victorian editor (talk) 21:37, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
