Organization
The comments about the investigaion into a possible conflict of interest in Commissioner Mike Brown needs to be sourced. My contacts at the highway patrol tell me his request to step down is related to family matters - he wants to spend time with his new wife. Actually, I deleted the text, it doesn't belong in the Organization section. I'd like to see a section titled 'SCANDALS', but I doubt there are enough reliable sources for information on them. 169.3.168.227 (talk) 21:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
POV
This:
In Fall of 2005 while Hurrican Katrina was bearing down on the New Orleans,LA area, the CHP made a Pro-Active decision to send aid. It was a decision that was much needed in the coming days. While choas ensued in the New Orleans city streets, the New Orleans Police(NOLA-PD)found a way to disappoint law enforcement nation-wide, that was to just simply quit and allow the city to worsen to the point where citizens were killing eachother and attempting to shootdown rescue helicopters. It took the National Guard twice as much time to arrive than what should normally be expected. Before the Guard had it's first boots on the ground, the CHP had more than three patrol helicopters over New Orleans, fourty plus vehicles on the ground and more than 250 officers and other staff including a SWAT team in New Orleans.
Not encyclopedic. It's POV, poorly written, and unsourced, and it's not really that important to the article. If anything, it belongs in a Katrina-related article. I really think we should take it out. At the very most, a neutral sentence saying that some support was sent to New Orleans is all we need. -Randomglitter 09:12, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Update(via the Officer Down Memorial Page)...another CHP officer dies(the first for '07)
Please confirm w/ www.odmp.org and add Officer Douglas Mitchell to the CHP obituary list.
He was struck and killed in the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova on Tuesday(7-31-07), while putting down a "spike strip" to help end a pursuit.
Thanks,Michaela92399 02:50, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
It's Officer Douglas Scott Russell. However, this illuminates a problem with the section of fallen officers. It looks as though it started as a list of those who died within a particular stretch of time, but others have been added on since, with good intent, but not in keeping with the sense of the section. Since the list of fallen officers is not exhaustive and not intended to be exhaustive, perhaps we should remove the 7th entry, to preserve the original point being made. It's that or list all 200. Tone in Newhall Incident section
The Newhall Incident section reads like a tabloid article. It's over the top with drama, and the tone is not appropriate for an encyclopedia. It ought to be rewritten. 72.25.118.48 (talk) 17:09, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Old School Ref Tags need updating
There's some old school ref tags that need updating in this article to use the current autoref functionality. I'm not experienced yet at this, so I'm putting in a request here so that this can get taken care of by someone familar with autoreffing. — fcsuper (How's That?, That's How!) I don't think the link to Nikki Catsouras belongs in this article, unless there was mention of the incident in the "Incidents of Misconduct" section. As it stands it has no context and makes little sense. MilesFrmOrdnary (talk) 12:03, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed, I removed the link. I don't see any relevance to the page. Cop39 (talk) 11:36, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Largest State Police Agency
Excuse my nitpicking, but why did anyone bother writing "The California Highway Patrol is the largest state police agency in the United States." Given that California is the most populous state in the US, is this worth mentioning. I saw something similar under the Massachusetts State Police. It says they're the largest state police department in New England. Of course, Massachusetts is the largest state in New England, so that goes without saying. NPOV & blatant WP:FAKE
Somewhat controversially, the California Highway Patrol is responsible for regular local police duties in Oakland and Stockton, such as patrols and responding to 911 calls.
Being curious about the "controversy" I looked at the 3 cited references. The whole of the controversy is a debate regarding the economic merits of the assignments, nothing related to local police duties. But even more, the references specifically and clearly state that the CHP does not perform regular local police duties, and does not respond to 911 calls. This is blatant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.77.75.92 (talk) 06:40, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Captain | Head of a division within the department
Recently, OddHawaiifiveo changed "Captain" to "Captain | Head of a division within the department". I am curious to this person's source. Almost every Division I am aware of within the CHP is headed by a Chief or higher. Area offices are usually headed up by a Captain. Area offices are not called divisions. I was a CHP officer for 20 years, and spent many years working at one of the seven Division Headquarters. Even if this is correct, I don't think it is in line with the rest of the listings in this box. Phil Konstantin (talk) 23:00, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- 14 February 2019 - I Undid revision 882603227 by OddHawaiifiveo. I removed "Head of a division within the department" from the Rank section as it does not accurately reflect the structure of the CHP. I was a spokesperson for the CHP and was not aware of this being correct. I contacted the CHP directly and talked to several active members. They all said this is inaccurate. The person who added this did not list a source, or respond to my inquiries. Per the CHP, Captains are not heads of "Divisions" within the CHP. Phil Konstantin (talk) 18:40, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- Would someone who is not related to the CHP please delete this inaccurate change to the Rank Structure. CHP officials say Captains are not in charge of Divisions. I cannot change it because I worked for the CHP 14 years ago. Some have felt that was a COI. Phil Konstantin (talk) 19:18, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- It was also an unsupported change based on original research. But I will take a look at this for you. I've also replied on your talk page. - wolf 23:04, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
