Renaming

edit
...they renamed the town after its president, Algernon S. Buford....

What was the original name? Is there a citation for this? —BozoTheScary 21:24, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looks like that is what it was incorporated as. I think the article is wrong. [1]Akubhai 16:27, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

STD study

edit
Buford STD Scare

A recent study showed that Buford's high schools and middle schools had STD rates ten times higher than the national average. One in five seventh graders in the city has Chlamydia, Herpes, or Syphilis. 60% of graduating seniors last year had HIV/AIDS. Buford's School Board has yet to respond to this news.[1] Buford's School Board has yet to respond to this news.

The information about the proliferation of sexually transmitted diseases in the city was found in a respected medical journal and presented as neutrally as possible. I used only statistics and facts. When the school district issues a statement on the event, or when it comes up with a plan of action, I fully intend to update the entry accordingly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karthikganapathy (talkcontribs) 05:52, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I disagree with its addition to the article as I think it is undue weight on a negative event. Your use of the word "scare" is not a neutral point of view. Reviewing your edit history, you seem to have a negative view on several topics. I suggest that review Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. -- Gogo Dodo (talk)

Ok. Then if the word scare is changed to something like News, Study, or Disclosure, would that make it more neutral? Karthikganapathy (talk)

I agree with Gogo Dodo. If this article was much longer then it would be appropriate to add such a specific negative detail, but at the moment the article is very short and your "scare" jeopardizes the neutrality of the article. You are welcome to research more information about Buford, Georgia and lengthen the article a lot, but only then is it appropriate to add this detail. Your recent activity on both of your accounts (that I know of) displays ignorance to many of Wikipedia's fundamental values. I ask that you explore around the welcome page before making further edits. by hajatvrc at 06:20, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Government

edit

This article desperately needs a section on the government structure of Buford, GA. I don't know enough about it yet to make this entry. If someone does, jump in.

Otherwise, I'll do the research an an opportune time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.168.208.34 (talk) 08:38, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've added a brief section on the city's local government and representation, but it could always use more information. - SudoGhost 16:17, 24 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Tips for improving to a B quality scale rating.

edit

Just a few thoughts, but not an exhaustive review. First, Notable people should be moved off to a List of people from Buford, Georgia page. You can do a simple one like this example; or shoot for a the gold standard like this example.

Second, the history section is way too short for a city. I know it may be hard to find some good history, but for a B article, "Readers are not left wanting", and this history section leaves me wanting. --Dkriegls (talk to me!) 22:28, 6 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'll certainly work on expanding the history section. There are a few books on the subject that can be used to expand the section, the only problem is getting access to the books, but I'll work on that. - SudoGhost 23:05, 6 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I created the List of people from Buford, Georgia and I'll work on improving it as much as I can as well. - SudoGhost 23:45, 6 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi SudoGhost, I was just wondering, where do you live? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:AA61:5919:D84:C15D:486B:3EBB (talk) 01:39, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I live in Gwinnett County in the US State of Georgia, and my goal is to get the article of every city in Gwinnett County, Georgia improved as much as possible. Beyond that, where I am physically located is not relevant to the improvement of this article. If you have reliable sources that back up a claim that Lake Lanier Islands is "not in Buford", by all means please present it, but the official website lists it as being in Buford, as do plenty of other sources. - SudoGhost 01:56, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I respect that and I respect you alot for helping out the pages, I take care of the Braselton page myself due to me living in Gwinnett and in Braselton. Majority of companies and housing and businesses say that they're in a certain city, but are actually in a different one or are in unincorporated county. Being in Braselton, we're currently in 4 zip codes (30548, 30517, 30519, 30542) and in 4 counties (Gwinnett, Barrow, Hall, Jackson)and to be able to decipher if a company, business, or neighborhood is in our Town limits or not, I use the google search engine. Everything within the white dotted dashes (almost up to date, up to 2010-11) is within the Town/ City you are looking at. This also goes for ZIP Codes. Majority of the time, a school, a park, or any government building or site is not within the city limits but in the county, hence why I always double check to make sure I type it in right for the page I handle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:AA61:5919:D84:C15D:486B:3EBB (talk) 04:48, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well I think that ultimately comes down to the question of "how do you define in Buford or any other city? Is it defined by the legal city limits, or by mailing address or other criteria? I'm inclined to think that reliable sources tend to use the latter. For example, although the Mall of Georgia is just barely outside of the city limits, the Gwinnett Daily Post describes it as the "Buford mall"[[2][3] and does the same with Lake Lanier Islands.[4][5] I'm looking into where Google gets that data from, and how up-to-date the data is, because that does tend to change rather frequently. - SudoGhost 05:23, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've lived in the Town for about 8 years now and I know the council members and mayor well and I go to all the meetings and study the Town daily, also my parent was a cop for the Town and also for Flowery branch for a while. I love learning about Towns and what consist of them! Zip codes/ Mailing addresses is a pretty inaccurate source for learning what city its in due to the Government/ USPS being the ones that say who that company, residence, or business gets it mail from if they like it or not. Most cities have their own city maps available to the public and i've been told by city officials that Google Maps is the best way to look at it since they usually update about every year to two years. Most counties wont allow businesses or "money making" businesses or stadiums annex into cities due to the county wanting the tax and say on that specific building or stadium (as seen in Duluth). By the way, I was trying to add the Town logo to the Braselton page but i'm unsure how and i've looked at the help section trying to add it to the page but it doesn't explain very well, do you know how? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:AA61:5919:D84:C15D:486B:3EBB (talk) 05:43, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ownership of page

edit

It seems that some feel they are the "owner" of this page. Please don't auto-undo every change on this page. To quote https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Ownership_of_articles there is this segment:

"This page in a nutshell: No one "owns" an article or any page at Wikipedia. If you create or edit an article, others can make changes, and you cannot prevent them from doing so. In addition, you should not undo their edits without good reason. Disagreements should be calmly resolved, starting with a discussion on the article talk page."

I have been trying to start a section of movies filmed in Buford as I believe it would be interesting to those with an interest in the community. However I can't get the section to stay a day without it being hit with an "undo". I've tried to address every objection (cited source, etc) yet "undo" keeps getting hit. I'd rather instead of an undo, we have a discussion, and ultimately if agreed upon fill the list with other movies filmed here. It doesn't feel right that a single person (unnamed out of courtesy) has decided to be the sole owner of what goes on this page. Driven01 (talk) 05:07, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

(Update: I see you've added in (and expanded) with what I was trying to do. Thank you. Driven01 (talk) 05:11, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

For future reference, it helps to start the discussion once it is known there is a disagreement with the content, rather than throwing around accusations when your content was removed, as it created a serious imbalance in the article because there was no cause to single out that one film just because you personally saw it being filmed. - Aoidh (talk) 06:50, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Wasn't singling out one film. Was starting with that with the hopes of expanding it. I had tried to address ever concern you had. (IMDB not reliable, Not "Social media", etc.) It wasn't until your last comment that I actually understood your concern. Would have appreciated you starting a discussion as much as you desired me to.  :-) But seems it's worked out. Water under the bridge. Driven01 (talk) 21:00, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I will post my comments soon. Cheers, Sainsf (talk · contribs) 06:30, 3 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Lead
  • For an article of this length, the lead should be two to three good paras long covering all the major points in the article (per WP:MOSLEAD)
History
  • The recorded history of Buford began in the early 19th century. Perhaps a clearer wording would be (if this is what is implied) "Buford appears in historical records from the early 19th century"?   Done
  • inhabited by Cherokee "the" Cherokee   Done
  • The first non-Native American I think it should be "Americans"   Done
  • During the post-civil war construction When exactly?   Done
  • after the railway's completion in 1871 of the railroad Worded a bit clumsily.  Done
  • and the name was changed to Simply say "and renamed"   Done
  • "Shoes" look a bit too common to be wikilinked   Done
  • What exactly is ref. 11 the source for?   Done - Fixed the ref with archive.org
  • A statue of Roy Rogers and a Bona Allen saddle-maker saddling Trigger is located in downtown Buford. Source?   Done - Fixed ref to reflect that it also supports that statement
  • The portion in the 4th para dealing with the origins of Bona Allen Company should come before all the discussion about the company in the 3rd para to maintain chronology.   Done
  • Who was R. H. Allen?   Done - clarified
Geography
  • Buford's city limits are a few miles west Can this be more precise?   Done - Used city boundary map to find distance to what is supported in the source
  • "Season" looks too common to be linked   Done
Demographics
  • "Married couple" looks too common to be wikilinked, but the communities such as Latinos can be wikilinked   Done
  • Do not leave the paragraphs unsourced. They give an impression of lack of verifiability.   Done
  • 13.8% of those age 65 or over "aged"   Done
Parks and recreation
  • There are two unsourced lines   Done
Government
  • This section would better come immediately after "Economy"   Done - I followed Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline when structuring the article, but that way makes sense too.
  • 45th and 49th districts, and the 97th, 98th, and 103rd districts Why are two linked and not the other three? They are redlinks btw.   Done - Removed redlinks
Education
  • Source for 1st para?   Done
Media
  • Source for the 1st para?   Done
Transportation
  • Sources for the 1st and 3rd paras?   Done
Health care
  • Source for but no major hospitals inside the city limits...built in nearby Braselton.   Done
  • Emory Johns Creek Hospital No need to wikilink this, it goes to Emory Healthcare which is linked earlier   Done
Notable people
  • Many of Buford High School's alumni have also played professional sports. Source?   Done

No dablinks, no copyvio detected. That should be it. Cheers, Sainsf (talk · contribs) 18:39, 4 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've done some of it today, I'll finish the rest tomorrow. Thanks. - Aoidh (talk) 22:04, 5 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Very good, one point to go. Sainsf (talk · contribs) 05:23, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, work's been hectic, I'm working on that last bit but it might be tomorrow before it's done. - Aoidh (talk) 02:20, 9 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Sainsf: - Should be good to go, unless I've overlooked something I think every point has been checked off as completed. - Aoidh (talk) 04:40, 10 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Great, this looks almost ready now. A few final comments, on the references: Sainsf (talk · contribs) 06:13, 10 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Check this, a lot of dead or inaccessible links [6]   Done - See below
  • There is some trouble with ref. 72   Fixed
  • Ref. 65 is a bare URL   Fixed
  • Refs like ref. 47 and 78 need proper formatting and include more parameters. Use Template:Cite if they are not already used.

@Aoidh: Please respond. Sainsf (talk · contribs) 08:00, 14 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sorry work has been hectic, I'll get on that tonight or tomorrow night asap. Thanks. - Aoidh (talk) 18:28, 14 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
A note on reference 47, it's using the cite conference parameter like other laws referenced on Wikipedia, but the issue with GALILEO is I can't link to a URL because it's behind a login and the way they have it setup it that it navigates through some window within the page, so the URL is the same for everything within GALILEO, the only URL I'd be able to link is galileo.usg.edu as that's the URL displayed when accessing the content. Attempting to dig into that window and provide a clearer URL gives this kind of error - Aoidh (talk) 22:21, 15 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • @Sainsf: - All of the deadlinks that are truly dead now have archive links attached to them, and others (like some of the Gwinnett Daily Post links) were showing up in that list as dead but were not. All the other problematic links have either been fixed or replaced. - Aoidh (talk) 07:29, 16 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

County breakdown of population

edit

I've noticed several of the Georgia state highway maps show a county by county breakdown. Sadly https://www.dot.ga.gov:443/DriveSmart/MapsData/Documents/CountyMaps/Gwinnett.pdf and https://www.dot.ga.gov:443/DriveSmart/MapsData/Documents/CountyMaps/Hall.pdf do not show this yet with Buford, but I am hoping the Georgia Department of Transportation releases revised maps with these figures.
