former coach Bob Weltlich

To Sean Tuchy, formerly of the Ole Miss Rebels, I would say I believe your Christmas day story. I was called back to Mississppi in the summer of 1976 by my new coach, Bob Weltlich for classes and pre-season conditioning. While nothing noteable occured during the summer, his coaching style started to emerge during the start of the the 1976 season. The previous coaches gave coach Weltlich such a dysfunctional team, that the house cleaning started early. I was dismissed in mid December 1976 after having been warned not to miss any more classes. I then skipped class and was terminated from the team.
Before I left, players were being removed and several that had been recruited by coach Weltlich were thinking about quitting. Why? Well after the loss to Tulane in the Super Dome, coach Weltlich would not feed us after the game. Nor did we recieve breakfast and when we arrived in Oxford, we did not eat lunch, we went straight to the gym for practice. Practice started with a 45 minute, dive for the ball drill. Two lines, a coach rolled the ball out and the players had to dive for it. Not run and pick it up, dive for it. It then became an offense/defense competition. After beating us up physically and emotionally coach Weltlich stopped practice and called us over to him sitting in the bleechers/seats and said in a quiet but clear voice, " the next time you play like you did yesterday, you will think today was a picnic!" We then went on to have a 2 hour regular practice. At supper, I couldnt eat, I felt sick and didnt even want food in my mouth. I believe that was when the freshman who coach Weltlich recruited wanted out.
Bobby Knight came to do a clinic in the summer of 1976. I had my back to coach Knight and he would pass the ball to my right or left side. He would call a side and I would turn to catch the ball. I good reactionary drill. The last pass was a late call. Which meant, I had no time to catch the ball, it sailed by my head about a foot from my face. Coach Knight looked up at the crowd of coaches and said, "thats what you do when you dont like a player!" Everyone laughed. Coach Weltlich dismissed me 4 hours after he called my parents, I had no idea it was coming. He asked me if I had anything to say, I responded by saying that he needed to treat his players better. Coach Weltlich said, "I'm the coach, I do what I want " —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.141.0.1 (talk) 01:09, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
